Yankees officially cut ties with Clint Frazier, Rougned Odor

The New York Yankees released left fielder Clint Frazier on Tuesday.

That’s all, folks.

The New York Yankees announced Tuesday they have released outfielder Clint Frazier and second baseman Rougned Odor.

Both players had been designated for assignment on Friday, along with infielder Tyler Wade, to clear room on the 40-man roster.

That gave the Yankees seven days to remove their contracts via trade or irrevocable waivers. In the case of a DFA player clearing waivers, he can be outrighted to the minors or released.

The Yankees announced Monday they traded the 26-year-old Wade to the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

The 27-year-old Frazier played in 228 games with the Yankees over five MLB seasons, hitting .239 with 29 home runs.

Manager Aaron Boone reflected on Frazier’s injury-plagued time with the Yankees on Monday while volunteering at the Food Bank for New York City. Per Yahoo Sports:

“Big leagues is hard. Fortunately for him, his story’s not complete from a baseball standpoint. The bottom line for Clint is he’s a guy with a lot of ability and it’s just a matter of – obviously he’s dealt with some different injuries and things that have kept him on and off the field at different times. But I feel like if he gets the right opportunity and the right health, he still has an opportunity to write a really good career story. I certainly wish him well moving forward, but even when you’re really talented, nothing’s a sure thing. ... I do feel like he made really good strides on a lot of different areas of his game at different times based on some of the input, whether it be coaching, whatever it may be. Again, I just think some of the [timeliness] because of the different ailments and injuries really was what ultimately kept him from finding a consistent path.”

The 27-year-old Odor was a midseason acquisition from the Texas Rangers. He hit 15 home runs in just 322 at-bats this year for the Yankees, but had a .202 batting average. He led the American League with 178 strikeouts in 2019.
