“Chris and Roberta Laundrie have been informed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and the manner of death was suicide,” the Laundrie family’s attorney told the Washington Examiner. “Chris and Roberta are still mourning the loss of their son and are hopeful that these findings bring closure to both families.”

A coroner concluded that Petito died from strangulation. Her body was found at a Wyoming national park on Sept. 19. She had been missing since departing on a cross-country trip in which she and Laundrie traveled to various national parks.

Laundrie returned to his home in Florida on Sept. 1 without Petito. Her mother filed a missing person report for her on Sept. 11. Laundrie’s parents said he went missing a few days later after he left for a camping trip at the Carlton Reserve on Sept. 14. Petito’s remains were recovered from Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming.

After recovering Petito’s body, law enforcement issued an arrest warrant for Laundrie, which was followed by a manhunt. Laundrie’s remains were found at the Carlton Reserve after an extensive search.
