Marshawn Jeffries, a Cedar Rapids teen facing charges in the shooting death of Malik Sheets has pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and intimidation with a dangerous weapon.
Jeffries had previously been charged with murder and had been accused of shooting Sheets, along with fellow suspect Christian Emedi.
Fellow suspect in the case Emedi pleaded guilty to a second-degree murder charge. In his guilty plea, Emedi admitted to firing all five shots in the deadly shooting on the night of June 18, 2020.
Jeffries is still accused of having a gun that night and threatening to shoot a group of people.
Jeffries faces a maximum two-year prison sentence for obstruction and five years for intimidation. Court documents show he will serve those sentences concurrently, meaning at the same time so in all, he would serve five years in prison. A sentencing date has not been set.
Investigators say Sheets was shot at a house party in the 100 block of Regent Street Northeast after an argument.
Under Emedi's plea agreement, he will receive a 50-year prison sentence with 35 years suspended, meaning he will only have to serve 15 years of that.
First assistant Linn County attorney Nick Maybanks told Iowa's News Now that early on in the investigation, people were not truthful "but those people recently came forward and the picture became clearer of what really happened the morning Malik Sheets was killed."
Maybanks says he could not tell us what exactly lead to the lighter sentence but says that information will be released during Emedi's sentencing at the end of January.
