The Matrix Resurrections star Keanu Reeves has given fans a hint about what the new movie is actually all about, sharing some details about the film's themes.
With very few real details having been given away about the sequel's plot, let alone about how Neo and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) have been able to return following the events of 2003's The Matrix Revolutions, fans have been keen to learn more about what we might expect from the highly-anticipated movie.
Although Reeves didn't share any specific details, he did tease the sort of ideas that we can expect to be explored in Resurrections while answering questions posed by Esquire.

When asked what the most surreal part of playing Neo was after so many years away from the character, the actor said: "I've never had the chance to play a role 15, 16, 17 years later and that's some of what the film's about. So this idea of a past, and memory, and fiction, and reality, and truth."
It may not be a huge amount to go on, but it does tell us that the passing of time and memory will be an important theme. And, considering that former lovers Neo and Trinity don't appear to recognise each other in the Resurrections trailer, this idea makes us all the more intrigued about the movie's plot.
The John Wick star also deliberated over whether he would take the famous red or the blue pill in reality, and it seems that the actor isn't quite as decisive on that front as his character is.
"You know, reality and existence is tough enough, so it would be great to have the red pill so you could at least start from there," he said, referring to the pill that reveals the truth about reality.

"But you know, maybe they could have a blue pill for like a vacation, you know, like the vacation blue pill. But it still wouldn't be as good as going on vacation on the red pill!"
Reeves also addressed the big question of whether he has plans to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe at any point – and it seems that he's certainly open to the idea.
"Isn't it bigger than a universe? It's almost like a multiverse. It's the Marvelverse!" he said. "No, it would be an honour.
"[There's] some really amazing directors and visionaries and they're doing something no one's really ever done, especially in that sense in terms of the scale, the ambition, the production. So it'd be cool to be a part of that."
With plenty more Marvel projects on the horizon, there's bound to be a role that would suit the star...
The Matrix Resurrections is scheduled for release on December 22, 2021 in cinemas and on HBO Max in the US.
