In a surprise update regarding the vacant job at Old Trafford, former Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde is 'in talks' with Manchester United over becoming the club's interim boss following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The 57-year-old, who has managed Espanyol, Valencia and Athletic Bilbao during a 20-year spell in management, has discussed taking over on a temporary basis with United's football director John Murtough, according to The Guardian.

In fact, the report claims that Valverde has already started 'sounding out' potential players to strengthen the current squad at Old Trafford should he get the interim job but according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, no decision has yet been made.

That being said, Valverde is reportedly one of the five candidates on Manchester United's shortlist 'in case' current Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino is not allowed to leave Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain, adds Romano.

Valverde, who spent three years managing Barcelona between 2017 and 2020, winning two La Liga titles and a Copa del Rey, will bring a wealth of experience to the Old Trafford ranks if he does arrive after numerous spells in Spanish football.

Here's how social media have reacted to the news.
