The Boston Red Sox could be getting ready to swap out one former New York reliever for another.
Former Yankees right-hander Adam Ottavino is a free agent after spending the 2021 season in Boston following his trade from the Bronx to Beantown.
WEEI in Boston reports one of the arms the Red Sox are considering for 2022 is former Mets right-hander Jeurys Familia.
The 30-year-old Familia is coming off a three-year, $30 million contract with the Mets. He went 9-4 with a 3.94 ERA and one save in 2021.
He’s spent more than nine of his 10 big-league seasons in Queens, and was an All-Star in 2016 when he saved a major-league best (and personal record) 51 games.
As for the 36-year-old Ottavino, he was one of manager Alex Cora’s few dependable arms in the bullpen this year. Ottavino set career highs in wins (7) and saves (11) while posting a 4.21 ERA.
He teamed with former Yankees prospect Garrett Whitlock to give Cora a pair of high-leverage arms down the stretch and into the playoffs. But after watching Eduardo Rodriguez head to the Detroit Tigers on a five-year, $77 million contract, Whitlock could be destined for the starting rotation in 2022.
