Update: March 22, 2022

In news that we definitely weren’t emotionally prepared for this week…Shawn Mendes has shed some light on how he’s been feeling after his split with singer Camila Cabello last November *grabs Kleenex*.

The singer took to Instagram over the weekend to tease a new song with lyrics that definitely probably allude to his relationship with Camila. In the video, Shawn plays on the piano and sings, “I don’t want to know what it’s like when you’re gone / I don’t want to move on.” Zero caption, alllll the feels.

When he muses on the inspo for the latest track, he says, “You don’t realize when you’re breaking up with someone…you, like, think it’s the right thing. You don’t realize all the sh*t that comes after it, which is like, who do I call when I am, like, in a panic attack? Who do I call when I am, like, fucking on the edge, you know?”

The singer continues, “And I think that’s the reality that kind of hit me. It’s like, oh, I’m on my own now. Now I feel like I’m finally like…I’m actually on my own. And I hate that. That’s my reality, you know?”

In case you’re in the mood to keep having your feelings hurt, continue scrolling for a quick refresher on the original deets of what went down between the couple when they first split. P.S. Consider the wound reopen, Shawn:

Original story: November 23, 2021

Looking for more insight into why Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello broke up? A source tells People that their vibe kinda just changed once their work schedules became more packed.

“They had this intense relationship last year and spent months together during the lockdown in Miami. They both seemed very happy and looked like they enjoyed having a break from working,” the source said. “Things are different now though. It’s more back to normal life. They have careers that are taking them in different directions. They went from spending every day together to now not really spending any time together.”

That would be hard on any couple, so understandable! And if you’re wondering who initiated the split, a source previously told E! News that it was Shawn who got the convo going—but they both ultimately agreed it was for the best: “The relationship was getting stale and complacent and they decided they are better off being friends.”

Shawn and Camila announced their split in a joint statement on November 18, saying, “Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever. We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward.”

Reminder: Camila and Shawn began dating in July 2019 (after the music video for “Señorita” dropped and caused everyone to start speculating)—but they were BFFs for years before then, so something tells us their plan to remain friends will actually work out.
