How Matthew Stafford reacted to wife Kelly’s ‘pretzelgate’ incident

Matthew Stafford had quite the response to wife Kelly’s “pretzelgate” drama.

During Tuesday’s installment of her podcast, “The Morning After with Kelly Stafford,” Kelly addressed the incident that took place during last week’s Rams-49ers game in Santa Clara, in which she tossed a piece of a soft pretzel at a fan in response to heckling. Upon discussing the situation postgame, the Rams quarterback, 33, took something of a dig at himself.

“He said, ‘Well, I wish I was as accurate as you were, but I guess only one person in the family was accurate that night,'” Kelly shared.

Stafford, who is in his first season with the Rams, had a rocky outing in last Monday’s loss to the 49ers, in which he completed 26 of 41 passes for 243 yards and a touchdown. He also threw interceptions on back-to-back drives in the first quarter.

Kelly, who has been married to Stafford since 2015, added that the 13-year quarterback also said, “Maybe if I wasn’t playing so s—ty the guy wouldn’t be able to say as much to you.”

“To that, I looked at [Stafford] and I was like, ‘This guy would have said anything all night,'” she said, noting that the couple also decided that she’ll press pause on away games for the time being.

The Rams (7-3) are coming off of a bye and will take on the Packers (8-3) this Sunday in Green Bay.

As for Kelly, who apologized last week and said there’s “zero excuse” for her actions, she elaborated Tuesday on what typically goes through her head on game days and how the culmination of different factors could potentially lead to emotions boiling over.

“Listen, football and going to games, it’s fun, and in the end too, both sides need to be held accountable for what they do, and for my family and myself, this isn’t just a fun Sunday or a fun Monday, this is my husband’s livelihood, our family’s livelihood,” she said. “This is also nerve-wracking because anything can happen at any given moment on that field, which terrifies me. My anxiety is always high and so when I’m getting heckled at, or when I’m hearing all these things, yeah, I lose my cool and I did.”

While Kelly made it clear Tuesday that she’s moving forward, she also noted that she is never one to hide from her missteps.

“I’m human, I make mistakes, and I own up to them, I don’t f—king hide from them, that’s not me,” she said. “I’ve always been taught, I wear my heart on my sleeve so I do stuff probably in a hot second, but I also realize in a hot second, not the best, and I go up and I apologize.”
