Does this story sound familiar to anyone else? One Reddit user wanted to pre-order a new Ford Mustang Mach-E but was informed there would be a dealership markup once it arrived. Instead of getting rid of the markup, the Ford representative told the user to try out a Tesla Model 3.

Tesla doesn’t do dealership markups. In this instance, one user on the TeslaModel3 subreddit shared his experience ordering a Ford Mustang Mach-E. The dealerships he contacted would not budge on the markup. While some offered a limited markup of $5,000, that wasn’t good enough. Most of the dealerships wanted to add even more than that once the Mach-E arrived.

Upon hearing this, he moved up the ladder. Some contacts online led the poster to direct communication with someone higher up at Ford. He received a prompt response, but it wasn’t what he anticipated to hear. The Ford representative said if the markup was an issue, he should check out Tesla. No one could guarantee that there would not be a markup for the Mustang Mach-E once it arrived at the dealership.

Instead, he suggested the user check out a Tesla Model 3. Tesla might be raising prices on vehicles, but not after the order is placed.

The Tesla Model 3 price went up, but there are no dealership markups

Many people have praised Tesla for the ordering process. You don’t need to go in-store, you don’t have to haggle, and the price you ordered won’t change upon delivery. So the OP did just that and headed to Tesla instead of pre-ordering the Ford Mustang Mach-E.

In the comments of the post, many users shared a similar experience. Places like Subaru, Toyota, and Ford refuse to sell vehicles at the MSRP, which seems to be driving people to Tesla. When this person asked why Ford was adding significant markups to the Mach-E, the answer was because it was an option. People were willing to pay the extra cash, so the dealerships kept adding it.

For the price, buyers can order a Tesla Model 3 and have it in the driveway. Ford would still have buyers haggling at the dealership.

Ford is losing customers over this

This problem has become rampant during the pandemic. People want cars that are in short supply, and Ford took advantage of that. It was a well-documented problem back when the Ford Bronco started rolling out. Buyers would arrive at the dealership and be required to hand over an extra $10,000 for the vehicle ordered and paid for a year ago.

Tesla isn’t free of problems as a company, but it seems the dealership drama with other big-name automakers is sending people into its arms. Plus, the Ford Mustang Mach-E charging network is still having issues. All of these things combined make the experience of ordering a Mach-E seem less enjoyable than the Tesla Model 3. Until Ford can work out some existing problems and stop adding markups, it might continue to lose sales to Tesla.
