NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Police identified the alleged gunman who allegedly shot a 13-year-old boy in the neck in the Bronx Tuesday morning as 36-year-old Hubert Wiggs.

The shooting happened at around 7:20 a.m. in front of 928 East 223rd Street near Bronxwood Avenue in the Edenwald neighborhood as the boy walked to school.

Police said Wiggs was allegedly waving around his gun right before a single shot was fired.

Authorities said patrol officers responded and found a 13-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to his neck. EMS administered medical attention and transported the victim to Jacobi Hospital in stable condition.

Assistant Chief Kenneth Lehr said Tuesday afternoon that as cops established a crime scene they saw an individual "quickly put something on the ground and quickly pick it up."

"As the officers approached, it became apparent to them that [the] item, that object, was in fact a firearm," he said. "They gave verbal commands to that individual to drop that firearm. The individual's initial reaction was to try and hide it in his waistband. They gave further verbal commands, at which time the individual dropped that object on the ground."

Lehr said cops then arrested Wiggs in front of his home on the same street without incident and recovered a six-shot revolver.

Wiggs has been charged with attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a loaded gun, reckless endangerment and menacing.

He was on parole for a firearms and illegal drug conviction in 2015, arrested in 2018 for grand larceny and a year later was nabbed again for possession of a loaded gun. He was indicted and released on bail for that charge.

"You're talking about a 13-year-old boy going to school and he winds up having to have this traumatic experience," Lehr said.

An investigation remains ongoing.
