Getir Acquires Rival UK-Based Grocery Delivery Firm

Getir, one of the pioneers of rapid grocery delivery, has agreed on a deal to acquire UK rival Weezy.

Getir_couriersTurkey-based Getir was founded in 2015 and has grown rapidly across nine countries in recent years, with a valuation of nearly $8bn. Its expansion in the UK began in London in January this year, with it now operating in 15 cities and towns including Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool.

The acquisition of Weezy, which was founded in London by Kristof Van Beveren and Alec Dent in late 2019, offers Getir more coverage in the capital, as well as Manchester, Brighton and Bristol. Weezy’s 700 staff will join the Getir operation.

Turancan Salur, Getir UK General Manager, commented: “Teaming up with Weezy, which has quickly established itself across the UK, is an exciting opportunity and one that complements our people-first belief and business approach. We look forward to welcoming Weezy’s customers, employees and partners to the enlarged group.”

Van Beveren from Weezy added: “We are incredibly excited to continue our journey in disrupting the skyrocketing ultrafast grocery market. Getir has an unparalleled track-record of achievements and experience with an equally ambitious team. Our alignment in purpose and culture is a winning formula for expansion globally and we will continue to deliver an exceptional offering to consumers in minutes.”

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Faster, on-demand delivery is the latest frontier in the battle for grocery shoppers with a host of start-ups taking on established supermarket players and specialists like Deliveroo to capitalise on the surge in online shopping.

Last month, Tesco began working with delivery specialist Gorillas to offer customers the chance to have grocery products delivered within 10 minutes. US rapid delivery giant Gopuff also recently made its UK debut with the launch of its grocery service across ten cities.
