Hey there, listeners. It's Brett Molina. Welcome back to Talking Tech. More news out of Spotify. As you recall, we told you a couple days ago about an update from Spotify, which allowed you to review the lyrics of songs while you're still in the app. I got a chance to use it briefly over the weekend. It is delightful. It is long overdue. It just makes looking up lyrics on songs so much easier. Now we have another update from Spotify. This time, Spotify confirmed that it has rolled out an update for its premium users, which removes the shuffle option as a default when you play an album. How did we get to this point? It has to do with pop singer Adele. We'll tell you about this in a sec. But first, let's get to the feature. Previously, when you would pull up any album on Spotify, you would see the shuffle icon right next to the green play button.

So what that meant was anytime you found an album on Spotify that you liked, you press play, instead of playing the album at the very beginning, it would just automatically play songs at random. So if you had a favorite album and you enjoyed it start to finish as it was intended to be played, initially you weren't getting that on Spotify. It would just pick a random song on the album, and then jump around. Now when you go to play an album, you'll notice that it's just the green play button and you no longer see the shuffle option. That shuffle option still exists on playlists though. If you have playlists and you still want that shuffle option, it'll automatically shuffle when you press play. In a statement emailed to USA Today, Spotify said, "You can choose, still choose to shuffle an album by going to the Now Playing view and turning the shuffle toggle on."

So that's still available. The big difference is now it's automatic. It'll play start to finish as opposed to randomly choosing songs. This change was made in response to a request by Adele, who just released her fourth album called 30. Here's what she wrote about on Twitter off this news, "This was the only request I had in our ever-changing industry. We don't create albums with so much care and thought into our track listening for no reason. Our art tells a story and our stories should be listened to as we intended. Thank you, Spotify, for listening." So I personally like it. There are several albums that I have, and I'm sure others do as well, that are personal favorites. And you might remember them hearing from start to finish. It's weird sometimes when I was jumping into albums that I remember from my youth and it would just randomly start a song in the middle and I'm like, "This doesn't feel right." And you want to circle back and start it over and begin at the very top of the album.

I think it's a really cool change. I think it's nice obviously to listen to Adele. And of course, for Spotify, benefits them greatly. She's one of the biggest artists out there. And so making sure that that was something available to her for her album, but also for other artists goes a long way for them. And I think for listeners too, it's great as in improving the listening experience. But you also still have the choice too, if you like shuffling through albums and you prefer that, you still have that option as well.
