WMU Hockey Ethen Frank

Ethen Frank leads all of college hockey with 21 goals so far this season.

Western Michigan hockey took home three Player of the Week Awards as the National Collegiate Hockey Conference rolled out its weekly awards Monday.

Ethen Frank won Forward of the Week, Michael Joyaux was named Co-Defenseman of the Week, and Brandon Bussi earned Goaltender of the Week. The trio led the Broncos to a sweep of St. Cloud State in dominant fashion.

Frank earned his first career hat trick and became the first Bronco since 2006 with four goals in a game in Friday’s 6-2 win. Frank also assisted on Ty Glover’s goal to open the scoring in the rout for an outstanding five-point performance. He was held scoreless on Saturday. This was Frank’s second Forward of the Week honor this season and fourth of his career.

Frank now has 12 goals on the season in 12 games played, the only player in the country averaging at least one goal per game. His 19 total points have him in a four-way tie for first in the nation, along with teammate Drew Worrad, in points per game at 1.58.

WMU Hockey Michael Joyaux

Michael Joyaux had three assists and a goal in the weekend series to earn NCHC Defenseman of the Week

Joyaux produced three assists in Friday’s win. He assisted on both power play goals that the Broncos had, Glover’s in the first period and Frank’s in the third that completed his hat trick. Joyaux later assisted on a goal by Max Sasson that pushed the Bronco advantage to 5-0 midway through the third period.

Less than 20 seconds after the Broncos scored for the first time Saturday, Joyaux found the back of the net for his third goal of the season. He also helped the Broncos post a shutout in Saturday’s matchup. Joyaux now has 14 points this season, tied for second-most in the NCHC among defensemen. This is Joyaux’s second Defenseman of the Week honor this season and fourth of his career.

WMU Hockey Brandon Bussi

Brandon Bussi earned NCHC Goalie of the Week for the third time this season after stopping 58 shots and only allowing one goal in a weekend sweep of North Dakota.

Bussi made 28 saves in the series opener Friday, missing some time in the first period due to a facial laceration caused by a high stick. He surrendered two goals but earned the win. Saturday, Bussi made 36 saves for his second shutout of the season and his career. He helped hold St. Cloud State’s high-powered power play unit to just 1-7 on the weekend.

Bussi posted a .970 save percentage in the weekend sweep. This is his first Goaltender of the Week Award this season and second of his career.

The Broncos return to the ice Friday and Saturday for a series at St. Lawrence. Both games will start at 7 p.m.
