CAPITALS VS. CANADIENS WHAT TO WATCH
From NBC Sports Washington's Matt Weyrich:
"In getting out to a slow start and blowing a two-goal lead all in one game, the Capitals’ performance in Thursday’s 4-3 overtime loss to the Ottawa Senators was a stark difference from the way they’ve played throughout the month of December." Read more.
"The Capitals have dealt with injuries all season, but they suffered one of their most significant blows ahead of the holiday break Friday when defenseman John Carlson left their win over the Winnipeg Jets with a hand to his face stopping the flow of blood." Read more.
CAPITALS VS. CANADIENS PLAYERS TO WATCH
Erik Gustafsson, Capitals, D (37 games, 5 goals, 15 assists): Gustafsson enters Saturday's game riding a six-game point streak, the longest such streak by a Capitals defenseman not named John Carlson in 11 years.
Cole Caufield, Canadiens, RW (36 games, 19 goals, 9 assists): After receiving some down-ballot votes for the Calder Trophy last season, Caufield has built on his strong rookie campaign and should blow past his goal total of 23.
