What to Consider

Everyone has different tastes when it comes to games. Because games are such a subjective form of entertainment, it's important to know what kinds of games you (or the person you are shopping for) are interested in before scrolling through the best-sellers. If you love titles like Elden Ring and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for example, you’ll probably enjoy other big action-adventure games.

If you are shopping for a child, there are a lot of extra considerations to make. Be sure to look at the ESRB rating for a game—it can tell you at a glance what kinds of content are present in any video game. Be particularly aware of kids' games with online features and in-game real-money transactions.

How We Selected

All our selections come from a mix of personal experience, critical reviews, and audience scores across a wide variety of sites and online storefronts. We highlighted a diverse set of games spanning genres, age-ranges, difficulty levels, and tones. Lastly, we chose not to include sports titles that are released every year, like FIFA and Madden.

Pros
  • Stunning graphics, setting, animation, music, and more
  • Father-son dynamic keeps the story grounded
  • Gripping action
Cons

God of War was originally released on the PS4 in 2018. It received universal acclaim, with many outlets awarding it a perfect score for its masterful storytelling, affecting characters, immersive environment, and bombastic action.

A soft reboot for the series, you play as Kratos, the former Greek god of war, on a journey to spread the ashes of his former wife, alongside his son Atreus. God of War mixes heartfelt father-son moments with beautiful vistas in a Norse-inspired realm, plus the heart-pounding action spectacles the series is known for. It remains one the best games for PS4 and PS5 alike.

    • A joyful and charming tone

    • Intuitive controls
    Cons
    • Can be repetitive at times

Sackboy: A Big Adventure takes a lot of cues from Mario titles like Super Mario 3D World. It’s a cooperative platforming adventure game where you navigate a beautiful and charming setting by running, jumping, sliding, and puzzle-solving, with the occasional fisticuffs.

The game itself looks like a toy box come to life, with characters made of spun yarn, glued-together cardboard, and more. This all-ages adventure is great for kids and adults alike.

    • Stylish, anime-esque aesthetic
    • Complex turn-based battles
    Cons
    • Repetitive at times

Persona 5 Royal is undoubtedly one of the best role-playing games for Playstation—or any console, for that matter. First released in 2016 as Persona 5, Persona 5 Royal is an expanded version of the original, with extra content, characters, and plot lines.

The story centers on a group of Japanese high-schoolers who moonlight as “The Phantom Thieves,” vigilantes with special powers that can reveal and change people’s psyches. It’s a long game, full of everything from stinging political commentary to joyful after-school merriment.

Tying things together are complex turn-based battles and a consistently stylish presentation with funky music.

    • Ominous, unsettling gothic setting
    Cons
    • Can be frustratingly difficult

Bloodborne is a PS4-exclusive title made by the team behind Dark Souls, Sekiro, and Elden Ring.

Released in 2015, it’s a challenging action title where players battle their way through an ominous Victorian gothic world that gradually twists into a Lovecraftian nightmare. Using a variety of weapons, items, skills, and evasive techniques, players battle monsters and entities gone mad from a widespread plague.

The story is melancholy and cryptic, while the action is challenging and exhilarating. It remains one of the most popular titles released exclusively for PS4.

    • Very repetitive once the main story is completed

Destiny 2 has changed a lot since its initial release in 2017. Today, it's a thriving free-to-play multiplayer shooter with a sprawling sci-fi setting to explore. While much of the game can be played alone, most of the fun comes from teaming up with friends and strangers online to fight your way through epic battles against aliens, robots, and enemy factions.

You can also face off against other players in team-based battles, similar to games like Halo: Infinite and Overwatch. The linked Legendary Collection includes Destiny 2 and two expansions, all for one low price.

The latest in the long-line of LEGO games, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is the biggest and boldest LEGO game yet. Like prior iterations, it retells the story of a beloved media property, only wordless, and with LEGO recreations of characters, settings, and moments. Add a whole lot of slapstick humor, and you’ve got yourself a fun LEGO game.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga retells the story of all three Star Wars trilogies, from The Phantom Menace to The Rise of Skywalker. Unlike past iterations, the game features an over-the-shoulder camera, putting you closer to the action and closer to the fun.

    Pros

    • Stunning graphics and animation
    • Really makes you feel like Spider-Man
    Cons
    • Can be overly flashy at times

Fans of superhero movies will find a lot to love in Marvel’s Spider-Man. This 2018 title blew critics away with its stunning recreation of New York City and its thrilling, web-swinging action.

You play as a slightly older Peter Parker, navigating an increasingly complicated double life as a 23-year-old research assistant and superhero. While not incredibly original, the story is affecting, and easier for newcomers to enjoy than many Marvel movies.

Still, the highlight of the game has to be swinging around NYC as Spider-Man. Flying, diving, dashing and leaping around the city's iconic skyscrapers is worth the price of entry alone.

    Pros
    • Based on real Greek mythology
    • Many different play styles to choose from
    • Stunning environments and incredible music
    Cons
    • Can become too frantic and fast-paced for some

Hades is one of the most critically-acclaimed games of 2020. Made by indie game studio Supergiant Games, Hades is an action-packed brawler set in the Greek mythos. You play as Zagreus, son of Hades, as he tries to escape the underworld and reach Mount Olympus.

You will fail often, but hacking and slashing your way through the underworld is so fun that failure is enjoyable—it just means more time to interact with Greek figures like Hades, Nyx, Thanatos, and dozens of others. Hades is beautifully realized, well-written, and action-packed.

Apex Legends is one of the most popular games ever made, right up there with hits like Grand Theft Auto V and World of Warcraft. It’s a free-to-play online battle royale game, where players—usually in teams of three—face off against up to 20 other teams in a winner-takes-all conflict.

Players start with almost nothing, and have to find weapons and other gear as they go. With unique characters, excellent shooting mechanics, and dynamic mobility, it's no wonder the game had over 100 million total players in 2021.

    Cons
    • High-skill ceiling

Rocket League’s simple but wacky concept took the world by storm when it was released in 2015. Since then, the game has switched to a free-to-play model, and become one of the best games in that category.

Rocket League is essentially soccer, but you control a rocket-powered car instead of a person. Because the rules are in large part the same as those in soccer, it's easy for anyone to pick up and play. But the rocket-powered cars are where the bulk of the nuance is—turning, boosting, and launching your vehicle through the air for passes, kicks, blocks, and headers is endlessly thrilling and complex.
