Jennifer Lawrence says she took a break from acting because she felt like "everybody had gotten sick of" her.

Having earned critical acclaim for her performances in Winter's Bone and X-Men: First Class, Lawrence's stardom was amplified further when she portrayed protagonist Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games in 2012.

Two sequels, three Oscar nominations and an Academy Award win – for Silver Linings Playbook in 2013 – followed, as she appeared in 14 movies across seven years.

After a string of box office disappointments though, with the likes of Passengers, mother!, Red Sparrow, and Dark Phoenix failing to find their audience, Lawrence felt like she had no choice but to step away for a while.

"I was not pumping out the quality that I should have," she told Vanity Fair recently, ahead of her comeback in Netflix's star-studded disaster comedy Don't Look Up. "I just think everybody had gotten sick of me. I'd gotten sick of me.

"It had just gotten to a point where I couldn't do anything right. If I walked a red carpet, it was, 'Why didn't she run?'… I think that I was people-pleasing for the majority of my life.

"Working made me feel like nobody could be mad at me: 'Okay, I said yes, we're doing it. Nobody's mad.' Then I felt like I reached a point where people were not pleased just by my existence. So that kind of shook me out of thinking that work or your career can bring any kind of peace to your soul."

Don't Look Up will be available to stream from Christmas Eve on Netflix.
