WACO, Texas — Nearly a year after a crash involving a Waco officer during a police funeral procession, the Waco Police Department arrested the alleged driver who caused the crash.

Waco PD announced Monday that it arrested Jelani James, 36, on Nov. 16.

Police say around 11 a.m. on Nov. 25, 2020, a Waco motorcycle officer was conducting a police funeral escort and traveling south on Corporation Parkway.

Waco PD said James pulled up and stopped at the intersection of Corporation Parkway and Crosslake Drive during the procession, then saw a break in the procession and tried to cut through. At the same time, the unidentified Waco officer was traveling through the intersection and crashed into James' vehicle, police said.

A second Waco police officer was called out and responding to the crash when that officer got involved in a separate collision at the intersection of South 18th Street and Clay Avenue.

Both officers were transported to the hospital. One was released shortly afterward, police said.
