Men's basketball opens busy week at Minnesota-Duluth

11/22/2021 9:57:00 AM | Men's Basketball

ST. ClOUD, MINN. - The St. Cloud State University men's basketball team was on a roll to open the 2021-22 season. The Huskies opened with two straight wins at their home tournament, but lost their last two contests to Clarke and Minnesota State. On Tuesday, St. Cloud State looks to get back on the winning track as the team heads to Duluth, Minnesota for it's Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) opener against Minnesota-Duluth.

It will be the first of three games the Huskies play this week, all on the road and away from the comforts of Halenbeck Hall. After Tuesday's games, St. Cloud State will travel to the state of Michigan, where it will face Northern Michigan on Saturday, November 27 and Michigan Tech on Sunday, November 28 in the final nonconference games of the regular first.

Before the Huskies can focus on the Wiscats and (other) Huskies, though, they must first face the Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. St. Cloud State holds an 11-7 advantage in its last 18 meetings with Minnesota-Duluth and are 6-4 in the last 10 games. However, the Huskies have struggled at Romano Gymnasium, as they've gone 1-2 in the last three games in Duluth, Minnesota.

Live stats and video will be available for all three St. Cloud State men's basketball contests this week, and there will also be live radio broadcasts for Tuesday's NSIC opener as well. Score updates will be made to the team's official Twitter page (@scsuhuskies_mbb) when possible.

Here are the five things to know before the Huskies busy road week:

1-1 - St. Cloud State and Minnesota-Duluth put on a show in the final weekend of the 2020-21 regular season. With a trip to the playoffs on the line, the Huskies dropped the weekend opener 73-60 before rallying for a 91-86 win on Saturday. The win clinched a trip to the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament for St. Cloud State, its first trip to The Pentagon since the 2018-19 season.

24.5 - As per usual, Anthony Roberts (Chicago, Ill. / Oak Park) and Caleb Donaldson (Bloomington, Ill. / Bloomington) provided the bulk of the Huskies offense in the 91-86 win over the Bulldogs last season. Roberts scored 29 points in the victory and added 12 rebounds, two assists and a steal, while Roberts shot 8-15 from the floor and 2-3 from three-point range to score 20. Matthew Willert (Buffalo, Minn. / Buffalo) and Josh Tomasi (Mebourne, Australia / Box Hill) each scored 14 points a piece in the victory, while Ryan Bagley (Pocatello, Idaho / Burley) added 11 assists.

13 - The Huskies will look to even the series with Northern Michigan later this week, as this will count as the 13th meeting between the two teams. In the 13 meetings, the Wildcats hold a 6-7 advantage over St. Cloud State and won the last meeting 93-91 in overtime. That last game occurred in 2006-07, when "Lips of an Angel" was the No. 1 song on the radio.

2009-10 - This will be the first meeting between St. Cloud State and Michigan Tech since the 2009-10 season, though the teams share plenty of history. Since 1954-55, when the series first began, the two Huskies have squared off 53 times with the St. Cloud State Huskies holding a 37-16 advantage. In the teams last meeting in 2009-10, St. Cloud State won by a final score of 75-62, and the two teams have not met since.

89.0 - After opening the season with wins over Ouachita Baptist and Harding, the Huskies have gone 0-2 in their last two contests, dropping games to Clarke (94-89) and Minnesota State (84-69). In both games, St. Cloud State's defense surrendered an average of 89.0 points a game, whereas in the previous week, the Huskies held opponents to 71.5 points per game. St. Cloud State's offense, though, continued to shine, as the team averaged 76.5 points in both losses.
