PS5 Faceplates From Sony May Finally Be Coming

It looks like Sony may finally be getting ready to start making or selling PS5 faceplates, as a new report states the company just had its patent published. To be clear, this doesn’t mean that Sony is actually going to start making faceplates. What it does mean is that Sony could be at least considering the option.

Last year, Dbrand, a company famous for making skins for all kinds of tech, made third-party faceplates for the PS5 called Darkplates. Sony then sent Dbrand a cease and desist and the company had to stop selling them. Which it did, until it came out with Darkplates 2.0 that have a slightly different design. And perhaps this is the reason. Sony probably wants to be the only company offering official faceplates or skins for its latest gaming console.

Sony filed for the PS5 faceplates patent on last year

While the PS5 faceplates patent was published on November 16, 2021, Sony actually filed for the patent last year. Prior to the PS5’s official launch. Sony has hinted before that different colored faceplates would be something offered to customers.

But without any patents there’s no way Sony would begin selling them. Now one year later, it seems the time may be right for Sony. So far, the PS5 comes in white only. Meanwhile, it offers the DualSense controller in black and red, and now offers a black version of the Pulse 3D Audio headset.

All that’s left are the faceplates so that just about everything can match. And, now could be the perfect time. With holiday shopping in full swing and plenty of retailers doing restocks of the PS5.

Interestingly, the patent refers to the accessory as a “skin cover” for the PS5. But the diagram sketches in the patent look like the removable faceplate covers. So maybe Sony is thinking about making both, or perhaps it just refers to the faceplates in this patent as skin covers.

Either way, it looks like this may be an accessory people can expect from Sony sometime in the future. And if so, it’s only a matter of time before they become available for purchase.
