We all know the most sustainable way to shop is to buy vintage—or nothing at all. But that mantra doesn’t exactly come in handy when it’s time for your next workout class and your go-to five-year-old leggings are finally unraveling at the seams. The good news is that many activewear brands have made a push to be more responsible—and some have even been founded on eco-friendly principles. Even more, the best sustainable activewear brands are just as stylish and performance forward as they are earth minded.
Still, the confusing thing about sustainability in the fashion space is that there’s no single industry-wide definition of the word: For some, it means using deadstock or other recycled fabrics, and for others, it means operating on a preorder model so the brand meets—and never exceeds—customer demand. Some have even qualified for B Corp status, which, according to its site, means the brand meets “the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose.”
Though not all of these brands come with global certification, many of them are working to design responsible, mindful high-tech activewear pieces that are made to move. Ahead, seven sustainable activewear brands to shop now.
