Appetite for denim seems to be at an all-time high. Many of us lived in sweatpants throughout the pandemic, so in the last few years jeans have become a welcome alternative to our tired loungewear. Baggy jeans have, unsurprisingly, become the most popular silhouette, but bootcut jeans are also on the rise.

A more accessible alternative to the super-low-risers that have been trending of late, countless celebs have been drawn to the bootcut’s throwback aesthetic. In February, Bella Hadid was spotted rocking a pair of bootcut jeans with a simple tank top and cowboy boots, meanwhile Rihanna has taken to wearing them on nights out with heels and logo tees. Then there’s the queen of Noughties style, Kate Moss, who never really abandoned the denim silhouette, and is often snapped out and about in London in bootcut jeans and a blazer.
On the spring/summer 2024 runways, meanwhile, denim aficionado Diesel placed its bet on the bootcut, sending distressed pairs down the runway, styled with matching crop tops and stacked heels. On the other end of the spectrum, Chloe’s new creative director Chemena Kamali took her bow at the brand’s autumn/winter 2024 show in a pair of loose-fitting bootcut jeans with a tucked-in shirt and sneakers. From paint splatters to Parisienne chic – talk about versatility.

When it comes to brands, Kendall Jenner is a vocal proponent of Khaite’s Danielle jeans, which are made to “give the illusion of longer legs”. British Vogue’s commerce director Naomi Smart is another fan of the Danielle. “Khaite founder Catherine Holstein has nailed the best, most flattering classic jeans,” she says. “The Danielle, cut high on the waist in non-stretch denim, elongates the leg like no other. I’ll be adding every wash to my collection for that vintage feel.”
Styling-wise, if you want to embrace the silhouette’s Noughties roots, let old-school bootcut lovers, such as Jennifer Aniston, Gisele Bündchen, Beyoncé and Halle Berry, be your muses (the latter even wore them on the red carpet). Sporty tees, tinted sunnies, hobo bags and pointed shoes are non-negotiables.
