Music director prefers to play violin with youth orchestra
NewsLiverpool’s newly installed music director Domingo Hindoyan is trying to reach all levels of the music community.
This weekend he swapped baton for violin and played with a mixed ensemble of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, its Youth Orchestra and Youth Academy Orchestra.

Reminds e of the old joke;
If an orchestral player, a violinist or an oboist can’t do his job, they give him 2 sticks, “play the drums”. If he can’t do even one, they give him ONE stick, “Lead the orchestra”. This is playing in reverse.
Great idea. It would be good if more conductors could step into orchestras (their own or some other) and be reminded what it’s like to have to follow a conductor – not to mention follow their section leader, fit in with their section, and do all the things they expect their musicians to do. (Not to mention playing the notes – I almost forgot about that small detail)

Making the youth orchestra conductor very nervous….
He also conducted the LPYO/RLPO for the closing finale. I heard him practising in his dressing room before the rehearsals – he took it very seriously! Such an inspiration and genuinely lovely guy. The young musicians took lots of selfies and instrument cases were autographed. Great way to celebrate the youth orchestra’s 70th season.

The music director of Metropolitan youth symphony in Portland, OR that likes to play chamber music with his fellow young musicians. I think that is one of the best ways to engage with youths and to inspire them! I feel that More MDs of youth orchestras need to this!
