As detailed by The Telegraph, star golfer Rory McIlroy ripped his shirt to threads after falling apart down the stretch during the final round at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai after entering the day with a one-shot lead.
A poor chip shot on the 14th hole cost the Northern Irishman his slim lead during the final round, and it was all downhill from there as the 32-year-old Irishman plummeted down the leaderboard to finish tied for sixth.
Clearly frustrated after finishing Sunday at 2-over par and 12-under for the tournament, McIlroy ripped his Nike shirt apart in a rage.
Passing McIlroy on the leaderboard to claim the $3 million champion’s purse was American Collin Morikawa, who won the event at 17-under after shooting 6-under during the final round.
The winner of the 2020 PGA Championship and the 2021 Open Championship, the 24-year-old Californian logged 18 straight pars before making his run during the final two-thirds of the last round.
“It’s not an encore. It’s not a swan-song farewell to what I’m doing in 2021. I’m going to set some high goals. I always have. I’m going to set the bar as high as I can get and keep going,” he said after becoming the first American to capture the European Tour’s season-long Race to Dubai title. “I’m still not number one in the world. I still have a lot to work on in my game. Obviously this week was good. I still thought I wasn’t playing amazing, but I made do. The mental game is nearly 50%, if not more than the physical game in our sport,” he said. “It’s not just physical; it is mental. You have to keep yourself in it. I know I’m going to enjoy this one a lot, especially since it’s at the end of the year. But there’s a lot more from me hopefully.”
McIlroy, who has won four major championships during his career but hasn’t captured once since 2014, will next compete at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas next week.
