Robert Saleh unhappy with Jets' penalties in Week 11

Robert Saleh wasn’t subtle about his frustrations with his team following the Jets’ 24-17 loss to the Dolphins.

Saleh answered questions with curt and succinct responses after the game, especially when it came to the penalties the Jets committed. New York was flagged on seven times for 48 yards, and there were a few that directly affected drives.

Joe Flacco committed an intentional grounding penalty on 2nd-and-2 from the Miami 12-yard line with 5:39 left in the third. The Jets missed a 40-yard field goal two plays later. Cornerback Jason Pinnock was flagged for defensive holding late in the fourth quarter, which set up a Dolphins field goal. But the penalty that crippled the Jets was a roughing the passer call against DE John Frankin-Myers in the fourth quarter that effectively set up the Dolphins’ go-ahead touchdown.

Saleh excused Flacco’s turnover as a “miscommunication with the receivers” and didn’t fault Pinnock for just being “aggressive.” But Saleh did take exception to what Franklin-Myers did. Saleh called that penalty “unacceptable” after the game.

“Ninety percent of the games in this league are lost, not won,” Saleh said. “This one was lost.”

Franklin-Myers knew his penalty was indefensible, too.

“That’s something that just can’t happen on my end regardless of if I knew it was going to happen or not. That’s just something that can’t happen,” Franklin-Myers said Sunday. “That penalty, arguably, cost us the game.”

The Jets are among the most penalized teams in the league. New York ranks ninth with 83 total penalties called against them and 13th with 70 accepted penalties. This is undoubtedly a consequence of fielding one of the youngest teams in the league and leading the NFL in rookie stanps.

Whatever the reasons, the Jets need to clean this up as the season progresses.
