Adele orders Spotify to remove option to ‘shuffle’ track list on ‘30’

What Adele wants, Adele gets.

It would appear the record-breaking “Go Easy On Me” singer, whose song became Spotify’s most-listened-to-globally track in a single day, has asked the streaming platform to remove the shuffle option on her new album, “30.”

The pop star indicated as much when she tweeted at the music app on Friday: “We don’t create albums with so much care and thought into our track listing for no reason.”

“Our art tells a story and our stories should be listened to as we intended. Thank you Spotify for listening,” she added.

Now, for Premium subscribers, the “shuffle” icon no longer appears within the larger “play” icon as it usually does during Album View on Spotify.

Spotify tweeted to the now 33-year-old icon in response, “Anything for you.”

Head of music communications on Spotify, Christ Macowski, confirmed the move to The Verge. He said, “As Adele mentioned, we are excited to share that we have begun rolling out a new Premium feature that has been long requested by both users and artists to make play the default button on all albums.”

Adele’s new single “Go Easy On Me” currently holds at No. 1 on every major music chart, including Spotify, Apple Music and Billboard. CBS

He added, “For those users still wishing to shuffle an album, they can go to the Now Playing View and select the shuffle toggle.”

It’s worth mentioning that the new album’s debut track has held strong at No. 1 for four weeks on Billboard’s Hot 100, as well as Apple Music’s Top 100 — currently followed closely by every other track on “30.”
