(KNSI) — The St. Cloud Police Department is reminding the public of some basic safety precautions.

As we head into the colder months, police remind drivers never to leave their vehicles running with their keys inside. They say many vehicles stolen during the winter were left running unattended with the keys in them.

They say if you’re going to warm up your car and not be in it, only to use remote start and make sure it is locked. According to a press release, police say it’s better to bundle up and hang out in your car while it warms up for a few minutes than to have to go buy a new car because someone helped themselves to yours.

Police also warn people who have firearms to never leave them in a vehicle, garage, or other location easily accessible to others.

Investigators say they have seen a recent increase in stolen guns due to them being taken from places where they are accessible to others. Leaving a firearm in a car is “extremely dangerous,” police say, and they warn it could be stolen and “used by those that have no regard for public safety.” The best thing they say to do is to keep it locked up inside a safe or firearm cabinet.
