When Luke Hendel scored in the 81st minute for the Portland Pilots on Sunday night, it cut the Washington Huskies’ lead in half.
But the Pilots’ momentum didn’t last.
Washington’s Dylan Teves scored his third goal of the match in the 88th minute, and Teves’ hat trick carried the No. 2 seed Huskies to a 3-1 victory in a second-round NCAA playoff match at Husky Soccer Stadium in Seattle.
The loss ended the season for the Pilots (11-7-1), while Washington (15-1-2) will move on to a third-round match against No. 15 seed Indiana.
Teves opened the scoring late in the first half, finding just enough space on the right side of the box to sneak his low shot past two Portland defenders and goalkeeper George Tasouris.
Then came a flurry of goals late in the second half.
First, Teves sent in a shot from the left side of the box that caromed off the far post and into the net in the 80th minute. Hendel answered a minute later, knocking in his own miss on a penalty kick. But Teves iced it a bit later, connecting on a powerful strike from the right side of the box that beat a diving Tasouris.
Tasouris had seven saves for the Pilots.
