Patrick Mahomes After Cowboys Win: Chiefs Are 'Still Not Playing Our Best Football'

Erin Walsh

The Kansas City Chiefs won their fourth straight game Sunday with a 19-9 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, but quarterback Patrick Mahomes still doesn't believe the team has played to its capabilities.

"We're still not playing our best football," the former MVP told reporters after the win.

"Everything is right in front of us," Mahomes added. "We can be better, especially offensively, the defense can continue to get better and better each and every week. To be where we started to where we're at now—and still not playing our best football—I'll take that every time."

Kansas City's defense looked great Sunday, limiting Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott to just 216 passing yards. The defense also picked off Prescott twice and held the combination of Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard to just 82 rushing yards.

To put that into context, the Chiefs defense entered Sunday's game allowing 114.6 yards per game (4.6 yards per carry) on the ground. It was also allowing 258.6 passing yards per game (12.0 yards per catch).

However, the Chiefs offense is still inconsistent. Mahomes completed 23 of 37 passes for 260 yards, no touchdowns and an interception against the Cowboys. Entering Sunday, the Kansas City offense had been averaging 295.1 passing yards per game.

The Chiefs' rushing offense was better against Dallas, though. The team combined for 126 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. It entered Sunday's game averaging 110.5 yards per game rushing.

Regardless of how Mahomes feels, the Chiefs have all the tools to ride a hot streak into the end of the regular season. They still have much of their roster from last season's Super Bowl run, and they've got some time to figure out their inconsistencies.

The Chiefs enter their bye week atop the AFC West with a 7-4 record. They'll get some much-needed rest before returning to face the Denver Broncos on Dec. 5.
