20211121 Thompson Final Horn 01 Mediawall

The Buffalo Sabres and New York Rangers played a wild back-and-forth affair Sunday night at Madison Square and the Rangers won on as close to a buzzer beater as you'll ever see in the NHL.
Rangers defenseman Ryan Lindgren scored with 0.4 seconds remaining in the third period to give New York a 5-4 victory.
Rasmus Asplund, Vinnie Hinostroza, Tage Thompson and Rasmus Dahlin all scored for Buffalo. Aaron Dell stopped 31 of 36 shots.
Chris Kreider, Kaapo Kakko, Jacob Trouba and K'Andre Miller also scored for New York. Artemi Panarin recorded three assists.
Alexandar Georgiev made 14 saves on the 18 shots he faced. Igor Shesterkin took over in net to start the third period and turned aside all four of his shots.
The teams combined for four goals on four consecutive shots in a span of 1:22 in the second period, marking the fastest four goals in a game since March 21, 2017 (SJS at MIN: 1:03), according to #NHLStats.

How it happened

BUF@NYR: Asplund buries loose puck in front for a PPG

Asplund opened the scoring with a power-play goal with 4:07 left in the first period. He cashed in on a rebound in front as he crashed the net with Zemgus Girgensons. Kyle Okposo recorded the primary assist.
The Rangers tied it with a power-play goal of their own with 22:8 remaining in the opening period. Kreider fired in a one-timer in the slot on a pass from Artemi Panarin.
Hinostroza put Buffalo back in the lead 2:26 into the second period when he stole the puck inside the Rangers zone from Jarred Tinordi in stride and put his shot top shelf.
Trouba scored on an extended delay penalty to tie things back up. He jammed in a loose puck in front 8:03 into the second.
At the 8:59 mark, the Sabres had a goal called back when Cody Eakin, battling in front, inadvertently knocked the stick out of Georgiev's hand as the puck crossed the goal line.

The next four shots of the game were all goals.
The Rangers took the lead with 7:53 left in the second when Kakko cut in on the rush and beat Dell.
Then Dahlin left the puck for Thompson at the left point and Thompson then skated down the wing and found a hole to snipe a shot in with 7:03 remaining to make it 3-3.
On the next shift, with 6:48 to play in the period, the Sabres went up 4-3. Thompson won a battle behind the Rangers net and threw the puck across the ice to Victor Olofsson at the left wing. Olofsson then sent the puck to the point, where Dahlin one-timed a puck through traffic for his third of the season. Jeff Skinner set up the screen that allowed.
Then with 6:31 left in the second, a point shot by Miller found its way past Dell to once again tie the game.
When the teams took the ice for the third period, Shesterkin replaced Georgiev between the pipes.
Lindgren scored with 0.4 seconds remaining in regulation to send the Rangers home with two points.
Buffalo was outshot 13-4 in the third period.
