Lakers player grades: Russell Westbrook, Anthony Davis take over in win vs. Pistons

The Los Angeles Lakers had a roller-coaster game against the Detroit Pistons Sunday and won 121-116.

Los Angeles led after one quarter but performed terribly in the second. The Lakers allowed the Pistons, the worst scoring team in the league, to drop 42 points.

Detroit controlled the third quarter again, but that wasn’t the main storyline. LeBron James and Isaiah Stewart got into a wild scuffle that turned bloody, leading to both players’ ejections.

The Pistons eventually built a 17-point lead, but Russell Westbrook and Anthony Davis flipped the switch in the fourth quarter. The Lakers outscored the Pistons 37-17 in the final 12 minutes to break a three-game skid.

Here is how the Lakers graded individually from the win:

Russell Westbrook: A

Once LeBron went out, it was up to Westbrook to take charge. He was the driver behind Los Angeles’ comeback. Westbrook threw down dunks, hit a big 3, converted layups and made key defensive stops that exemplified his best qualities.

He finished with 26 points (10-of-21 FG, 1-of-6 3P, 5-of-8 FT), 10 assists, nine rebounds and two steals in 35 minutes.

Avery Bradley: B

Rarely does a player who missed all of their shots get a solid grade, but Avery Bradley is an exception. He went 0-of-3 on his 3-pointers, the only shots he attempted, but he was fantastic on the defensive end when it mattered most against Detroit’s guards, most notably Cade Cunningham.

Cunningham shot 6-of-21 overall and 1-of-9 from deep, and Bradley can be thanked for his efforts.

LeBron James: N/A

LeBron doesn’t get a full grade because his night ended abruptly. He had 10 points and five assists in 21 minutes prior to his ejection. All eyes are on what his punishment will be for the incident.

Anthony Davis: A

Anthony Davis had an underwhelming first three quarters, but he delivered when it mattered most. The most impressive possession was when he blocked a Cunningham 3-pointer, then blocked Cunningham’s layup attempt after the block, then finished a layup himself the other end.

Davis finished with 30 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, five blocks and four steals, one of which sealed the game. A Herculean effort from the star center.

DeAndre Jordan: C

DeAndre Jordan returned to the starting lineup to help with the team’s rebounding woes. In his 13 minutes, he put up six points (3-of-4 FG) and pulled down nine boards. That’s what the Lakers need from him, but his defense is still why he doesn’t play more often.

Talen Horton-Tucker: D-plus

Talen Horton-Tucker is on a rough two-game stretch. He came off the bench in this one and was mostly erratic on the offensive end. He shot 4-of-13 on the night for eight points and had a puzzling layup attempt in the final seconds that could’ve been costly.

Carmelo Anthony: A-minus

Besides some questionable fouls, Anthony also played a hand in the comeback. He drilled 5-of-8 3-pointers for 18 points in 30 minutes off the bench.

Dwight Howard: A

Dwight Howard is the reason the Lakers weren’t losing by more in the second quarter, and it didn’t happen in the way one would expect. Howard, who has made 3s in garbage time this season, made two in the second quarter: one from the right corner and one down the middle.

He finished with 13 points (5-of-6 FG) and five rebounds in 13 minutes.

Wayne Ellington: F

Wayne Ellington faced his former team for the first time but had far from the revenge game L.A. could’ve used. Ellington shot 1-of-5 on the night and all were 3s.

Malik Monk: C

Malik Monk had six points (2-of-3 FG), three rebounds and two assists in 12 minutes. He made strong attacks to the rim from the left wing that resulted in points for him or for a teammate, so a passing grade seems plausible.

Rajon Rondo: F

Rajon Rondo had five minutes of playing time in the absence of LeBron, but he missed all three of his field goals and didn’t return. The whole sequence when he missed a wide-open layup followed by another point-blank miss right after summed up his night.
