Duke Johnson could not have arrived at a better time to be part of all the fun the Miami Dolphins are having lately. The South Florida native was signed to the Dolphins practice squad in October, but finally got the call on Sunday in the Dolphins 24-17 win over the New York Jets. Three of Johnson’s four carries came on a crucial late game drive, that killed clock and resulted in a Jason Sanders field goal to all but put the win away.
“Every little thing helps,” said Johnson after the game. “And I think it goes back to actually the guys on practice squad and the looks we get during the week on offense and defense to kind of get us ready for that moment. And it’s just up to us to go execute so for me it was a good moment especially doing it for my home team.”
Johnson says he is Miami through and through. He could pretty much see the Dolphins home stadium from his house growing up, and can’t believe he’s playing for his hometown team.
“Since a kid. I think since I’ve been playing football, for real. Just being the home team – anything Miami typically. Heat, Marlins, Panthers, Dolphins. So I’m a Miami guy. Went there – Miami Hurricanes. I’m Miami through and through.”
Myles Gaskin continued to hold his own in the running game, perhaps feeling the competition that Johnson provides. Gaskin had 23 carries for 89 yards, and a touchdown catch.
“It was good for me,” said Gaskin. “But the o-line did their job today. Proud of those guys up front. I know it hasn’t been what we wanted in the past but I think we took that step today against a very good d-line.”
The rookie Jaylen Waddle also had another impressive game, including 8 Catches for 65 yards, and an nearly rushing touchdown that capped of an impressive opening drive for the Dolphins. Tua Tagovailoa once again played good enough to win, as his offensive weapons continued to expand, going 27 of 33 passing for 273 yards, 2 touchdowns and one interception. His highlight reel pass was a 65 yard touchdown pass to Mack Hollins, which is the longest TD pass in Tagovailoa’s NFL career so far.
The Dolphin will look to improve to 5-7 next Sunday when they host the Carolina Panthers.
