Bear Necessities: How will Chicago respond without key starters coming out of the bye?

The Chicago Bears have historically struggled coming off the bye week. So it’s not exactly encouraging that they’re welcoming in a Baltimore Ravens team looking to get back on track after a brutal Week 10 loss.

The Bears have never won a game after the bye week under head coach Matt Nagy. They didn’t manage the feat under John Fox either. In fact, Chicago hasn’t won a game coming off the bye week since 2013.

There’s not a lot of faith that things will change when the Bears face the Ravens on Sunday, especially with Chicago down several key starters.

Perhaps the biggest blow is the loss of outside linebacker Khalil Mack, who was placed on injured reserve before having season-ending foot injury. Mack was off to a nice start to his season before a foot injury in Week 3 started to nag. The Bears tried resting him for three weeks — two games and the bye week — but they ultimately decided surgery was the best course of action.

Now, Chicago’s pass rush will be tasked with generating pressure on the quarterback without Mack. Robert Quinn, who leads the team in sacks with 6.5, needs to step up, as does second-year player Trevis Gipson.

But there’s another injury on defense that will impact Sunday’s game as defensive tackle Akiem Hicks continues to nurse an ankle injury suffered against the Steelers in Week 9. That puts the pressure on guys like Eddie Goldman and Bilal Nichols to step up in his absence, especially with Lamar Jackson on the other side.

On offense, Chicago will be without wide receiver Allen Robinson ,who suffered a hamstring injury in that same Steelers game. Robinson hasn’t had much production this season and is on track for half of the production he had last season. But he was finally starting to develop some chemistry with Fields in Week 9 before he was hurt.

With Robinson out, Darnell Mooney is going to need to step up without the benefit of teams keying in on Robinson. Marquise Goodwin, who hasn’t been involved much in the passing game, will also need to get things going with Justin Fields, who’s found success in the downfield passing game.
