The Affair
The Showtime drama’s fifth and final season tried, and woefully failed, to fill the void left by Ruth Wilson and Joshua Jackson when it introduced Alison and Cole’s all-grown-up daughter Joanie — a full 30 years in the future.
Week after week, we watched her wallow in her own misery as she cheated on her husband, abandoned her children, and eventually confronted her mother’s killer — who wasn’t even brought to justice, by the way! — before Old Man Noah provided the clarity she needed about Mom and Dad to break free from the generational trauma that plagued her for decades. It was a bold but unsatisfying way to bring the series full circle.
It’s funny that Grey’s Anatomy didn’t make the list.
For which time? ;)
.
Bangs are always involved with flashbacks and time changes. And it is always awful. I’m one, however, that was glad Carol changed her hair. No bangs involved….
Couldn’t agree more with #1.
I was going through the list and thinking “were is ‘my’ dear Fringe? Please don’t you dare forget this amazing series”. Than I finally found it at the premium spot. Amazing.
Ooops, just saw some mistakes on my writing, my bad. Please ignore them.
I miss Fringe so much — just thinking about Walter brings a tear to my eye. One of my all time favourite shows!
I also was looking for Fringe on the list – and then it was there at #1. Excellent show. I need to rewatch it.
Sorry, but I disagree. We loved Fringe, and couldn’t wait to see it every week, especially when they started traveling to the parallel universe. But they jumped the shark when Peter ceased to exist at the end of S3. S4 became a long, tortuous exercise where we all knew that Peter would somehow return, and we just had to wait an entire season for it to happen, and S5 turned the show into something completely different than it had been before. While meeting the adult Etta was great, again we all knew exactly what the final scene of the season would be – Walter sacrificed himself, changed the timeline, and saved the world. All of the surprise and wonder disappeared the last 2 seasons.
I was so looking forward to The Blacklist without the Liz vs Red drama but it’s just as bad now as it was then. Stick a fork in it 🤣
I so wanted them to rebound, to have a season or two without the poorly written Liz vendetta. It’s like they’re punishing everyone who wanted Liz written off by making the show without her just as convoluted as the last two subpar seasons. I give up.
The placement of Riverdale’s time jump isn’t their fault. It was always the plan but COVID cut season 4 short so they had to wrap up those story lines first.
Maybe it wasn’t,but their weak writing after the refresh puts it low on this list.
i agree. the writing did them no favors
I have always felt like the time jump in Desperate Housewives was unnecessary and it never had the same magic of the first four seasons after that. Season 5 is awful.
Really? I felt it helped breathe new life into the show. While season 4 was a big improvement over seasons 2 and 3 it was beginning to feel a bit stale. DH remained good until the final (horrible) season.
So you’re saying the Alias time jump was good?? Um, No. It meant absolutely NOTHING to the overall story, as they pretty much ignored the jump as quick as they could. I liked the New Girl time jump and was so glad we got a proper ending. I agree about The 100 time jump. EPIC! But in all honesty, time jumps just mean the show is out of ideas and the end is Nigh.
The time jump itself was good in the sense of it being a great gut-punching twist… but yeah it effectively ended up killing the show.
Lost flashforwards was a game changer for the show. It deserves to be on this list.
I agree!
I wonder if it doesn’t count because they went back and forth so often? I loved the flashforwards.
Yes, I totally think this should count!
I can never hear the phrase ‘We have to go back!’ without thinking about that moment. One of the best season finales of a show ever. I agree that it should count.
The CW’s Dynasty made a big mistake by doing a time jump between seasons one and two. Original Cristal (actually Celia) was killed off in the S1 finale, but rather than picking up S2 with everyone mourning her death, the time jump essentially gave the writers a license to make the Carringtons forget Celia/Cristal ever existed, and drop “Real Cristal” on the doorstep almost immediately. The characters—especially Blake—looked so callous and uncaring as they embraced “Real Cristal” within an episode or two because we never saw their mourning period.
The 100’s time jump was great and it’s probably the point where the show should have ended. Then we would have been spared all the crap that was to follow.
hard agree
Well *I* liked The Affair’s time jump and the final season.
Likewise. The idea probably only came about because Ruth Wilson (Allison) left the show after season 4 (for what I think are valid reasons, from her perspective). The core of the show was the four principles in the original two marriages (Noah/Helen, and Allison/Cole), and with one principle gone, the show went epilogue for season 5.
Same! I actually really liked that they went 30 years in the future. I loved that they wanted to show what a ravished Montauk would look like from climate change as well.
Whoa. I meant ravaged**
#6. I can still see the character name and the real people behind them. God I loved this show. I’m sorry but I still really miss the theme too. I learned about computer’s along the way.
i definitely agree about riverdale. that time jump doesn’t hold up too well especially when you hear veronica specify that it’s 2021
Another, slightly more obscure, time jump not mentioned was FOX’s “Dollhouse.” Season one ended with an (unaired in the US) “bonus” episode, “Epitaph One,” which jumped forward to an apocalyptic future… then returned to that future in season 2 (and series) finale, “Epitaph Two: Return.”
Yes!! THANK YOU!! 💜
Thiiiiiiiis
I came to check if Fringe was number one and I’m thrilled that it was. The Fringe series finale was absolutely beautiful. The final season was so special. I only have one friend who loves Fringe like I do (clearly I need new friends since the rest are uncultured heathens) and we sometimes just text the gif of Walter listening to music in the car. This makes me want to watch it again. The cast is perfect. John Noble as Walter is by far one of my favorite characters of all time.
The Blacklist has never resolved the issue of Red’s true identity. Now, it seems like it (the whole purpose of the show) will be forgotten.
They made it pretty clear that Red was Katerina. I can’t even begin to entertain the sort of suspension of disbelief this entails but there you go.
I totally forgot that was even the answer! It is now forgotten…
It is so odd. We ‘ship’ couples all the time in every series…..then when they finally get together, what? Miscarriages? Infertility? Death! Cancellation! At least time jumps like 21 & 12 allow our couples to get together and have children (and avoid all that diaper changing).
WAYYY disappointed to not see Dollhouse on this list.
No mention of Star Trek: Discovery’s 930-year time jump? Talk about a game-changer.
I immediately thought of Discovery when I first read the headline. But at least Fringe was numero uno.
I would disqualify the 930 years on the grounds that almost all of that jump is only by virtue of the main characters time traveling. There is the fact that although the Discovery closely follows Burnham from the 22nd century to the 32nd century, the Discovery arrives in the 32nd century a year after Burnham, to find that much has happened to her during that year. The issue here is that the audience is already privy to what happened to Burnham, and has just been waiting for Burnham and the Discovery to reconnect. The only surprise when that happens is that, from the perspective of the Discovery crew, they just got there (in the 32nd century).
plus again this is the 2nd time the blacklist has done a time jump as the first time was after tom/jacob was killed and they had a year time jump where liz had been in a coma for a year
Totally forgot about that. Just goes to show time jumps don’t really work. Mostly just a way to get out of a failed/bad storyline.
Suprised you didn’t include 24 that show had to have set a record for time jumps albeit out of necessity. We just passed Live Another Day in the pandemic, and don’t even hit Legacy for another 2 years
Young Justice needed a spot on this list.
JANE THE VIRGIN and THE AMERICANS were perfection from start to finish and I don’t want to hear otherwise.
Correct
Honestly I’m surprised at the inclusion of some of these, and yet an utter lack of Battlestar Galactica…
To me, that one year jump was excellent – set up a run of four gripping episodes to escape the planet and helped reshuffle some of the characters and their relationships. Plus the concept of everyone living under cylcon colonial rule was really interested imo.
There were also some crazy time jumps in Agents of SHIELD that failed to make the list
Desperate Housewives was terrible after the time jump. There was such a drastic decrease in quality after that. Dhe show definitely took a turn for the worse after that.
My favorite time jump was Eureka, which wasn’t actually a jump forward, but time travel that created a new timeline with substantial changes to relationships among the characters. I expected the show to reset, but instead it kept going with the new timeline, which provided a welcome jolt to the show in the last couple of seasons.
Yea, that was a bold choice for that show. Though I felt it actually hurt the show in the long term. But it was BOLD!
