Consecutive scoring drives in the second half doomed the Jets

Despite 141 yards on eight Elijah Moore receptions, the New York Jets couldn’t earn a divisional victory on Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium.

Team history from Moore (as he became the first Jets rookie receiver to earn 140 yards in a single game since Rob Moore in 1990) wasn’t enough to top the equally woebegone Miami Dolphins, as the visitors earned a 24-17 win on Sunday afternoon. The Dolphins (4-7) won their third in a row through 273 yards and two aerial scores from Tua Tagovailoa.

The Dolphins got things started with an 11-play, 83-yard drive as Jaylen Waddle scored on a one-yard punch-in on their opening drive, good for the first rushing score of the first-round pick’s career.

New York’s defense buckled down from there: Ashytn Davis earned an interception that was set up by pressure from John Franklin-Myers before they forced three consecutive punts, two of which were the end result of three-and-outs. In the interim, the Jets tied the game on a fourth-and-goal touchdown pass to Jamison Crowder from two yards out.

Matt Ammendola and Jason Sanders each missed field goals on their last drives of the half to end the opening half-hour.

After forcing the Jets into a punt on their opening possession of the third, the Dolphins needed only four plays to go 90 yards, earning 65 on the scoring play that put them ahead for good, a tally that saw Tua Tagovailoa unite with Mack Hollins. New York followed things up with another Ammendola miss, but the Jets had a big play of their own, with Flacco finding Elijah Moore for a 62-yard six-pointer that temporarily tied the game.

Miami’s winning score was the final play of a 14-play, 75-yard drive that took nearly eight minutes, as Tagovailoa found Myles Gaskins for a five-yard touchdown. The Dolphins would then eat up nearly seven minutes of game time on a 12-play, 44-yard drive that ended with a short Sanders field goal. Ammendola finally converted on a short field goal to create the final margin, though the Jets were unable to recover Braden Mann’s onside kick.

The Jets (2-8) return to action next Sunday against the Houston Texans (1 p.m. ET, CBS).
