Celtic must be happy with the moves that they pulled off this summer. A number of them have proved to be successes and become important members of Ange Postecoglou’s first-team. Kyogo, Jota, Liel Abada, Josip Juranovic, Joe Hart, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt are names that come to mind immediately. And hopefully, a few of the other arrivals will come good eventually as well, as they settle into their new surroundings with time.

The same cannot be said about the summer transfer window of 2020 though. Things did not go as Celtic fans would have expected even though there were some significant moves that the club made.

The moves of Albian Ajeti, Vasilis Barkas and Shane Duffy, on loan, did not work out at all. Diego Laxalt was okay but not great during his time at Parkhead on loan and has returned since then. The only one that can be termed as a success is David Turnbull, who has established himself in the first-team.

There is one move that they could have pulled off though, which they did not, and it has certainly proven to be a mistake. And that is of Martin Boyle.

Celtic made a mistake by not pursuing move for Boyle

Celtic were linked with a move for Boyle in the summer of 2020 and it was believed that he could have been available for a transfer fee around £3 million.

In hindsight, that could have turned out to be one of the signings of the summer, because Boyle has been nothing short of brilliant since then.

His hattrick against the Rangers in the Scottish League Cup semi-final was just a taste of how good he can be. According to stats from Transfermarkt, Boyle has scored 14 goals in 18 appearances across all competitions this season. That is simply stunning and he was brilliant last season as well.
