The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.
This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo DS.
The DS launched in November 2004 in North America, December 2004 in Japan, and March 2005 in Europe, while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

October 2021 is the 56th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Switch by 471,817 units when compared to the DS during the same timeframe. In the last 12 months, the DS has outsold the Switch by 3.15 million units. The DS is ahead of the Switch by 10.31 million units.
The 56th month on sale for the Nintendo Switch is October 2021, while for the DS it is June 2009. The Switch has sold 93.70 million units, while the DS sold 104.01 million units during the same timeframe.
The Nintendo DS sold 154.02 million units lifetime. The Nintendo Switch is currently 60.32 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.

Switch just not going to make it.
I think the ds will likely win, but it all depends on when a successor comes out. People need to remember that the switch still hasn't had a price cut yet.
It received a €50 price cut in Europe just as the OLED was released.
That was actually around €30 in Europe which brings it more in line with its American price.
It was 330€ and now it's 300€, that's 30€. It was mainly due to inflation.
It was €330 here and it dropped to €280.
The official recommended price is 300€. Some retailers sell it for less. On Amazon in my country it's 288€.
With the disruption of covid, higher prices in parts and problems with shipping, do people still believe the switch will receive any price cut at all?
I don’t see it.
The decisive fight, we might know the winner in 4-6 months from now. The last graph looks like 130M is a 100% sure thing.
A DS vs PS2 graph would be so dope
Switch has 4 months with promising sales: October - OLED, November - Pokémon BDSP and Black Friday, December - Hollidays, January - Pokémon Arceus. Maybe this will be enough to catch up DS, making the lines cross again?
I think it'll come close, but not quite. In October the Switch only caught up by 471k.
DS will be at about 108.8m by the time Switch reaches end of January. Nintendo are only planning to ship 108.6m Switch consoles by the end of march, so no it's completely impossible.
Switch will be a few million units behind the DS launch aligned at the end of January, and then the DS holiday season is about to start.
DS (Septemeber 2009) = 108.8m
Switch (January 2022) will be about 104.5-106m
Wonder what the difference would be if there weren't any chip shortages.
