Emmerdale has responded to media reports that a racism complaint has been made on the set of the ITV soap.

The Sun has reported that a mixed-race actress was upset by an "inappropriate comment" made on set and that her accent was mimicked while filming was taking place for scenes that aired during the soap's stunt week in October.

The publication also reports that actors Matthew Wolfenden, who plays David Metcalfe, and Isabel Hodgins, who plays Victoria Barton, have been absent from filming since the alleged incident.

Wolfenden and Hodgins have not addressed the report publicly but The Sun writes that they have categorically denied all allegations. Digital Spy has contacted their representatives for comment.

An Emmerdale spokesperson told Digital Spy: "While we would never comment on individual cases, Emmerdale has robust policies in place to deal with any allegations brought to our attention and take the appropriate steps."

An on-set row involving Wolfenden and Hodgins was previously reported earlier this month. An Emmerdale spokesperson denied at the time that either actor had been removed from the set, saying: "Neither actor has been suspended from Emmerdale" and with these most recent claims, The Sun reports that neither have been suspended whilst enquiries continue.

David and Victoria are currently off-screen visiting Diane Sugden in Portugal, following Diane's recent exit. There has been no confirmation of when they might return.

The pair have been involved in some big storylines over the past couple of years, most recently playing a significant role in the soap's big stunt week as Victoria was almost drowned by her love rival, Meena Jutla (Paige Sandhu).

Other major storylines include Victoria's rape by Lee Posner and the subsequent birth of her son, Harry, as well as David's relationship with Maya Stepney, who was later revealed to be grooming David's teenage former stepson, Jacob Gallagher. Maya later left her baby son, Theo, on David's doorstep, with the child confirmed to be David's after a DNA test.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
