The New York Jets hoped they found their quarterback of the future when they selected Zach Wilson second overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. So far, Wilson's tenure in East Rutherford has been subpar, to say the least. Still, the Jets plan on having Wilson at the helm for quite some time, and the team is doing everything in its power to ensure he continues to develop.

According to NFL Network's Chris Mortensen, who was speaking on Sunday NFL Countdown, the Jets hired Wilson's personal quarterback trainer, John Beck, two weeks ago in order to aid with Wilson's development. Mortensen seemed to take this hire as a worrying sign for the Jets, however, suggesting the addition of Beck meant that Wilson was “fundamentally falling apart.”

It's no secret that Wilson has underperformed since debuting in the NFL. The BYU product has thrown just four touchdown passes and has nine interceptions. Additionally, he's fumbled twice and has completed just 57.5% of his pass attempts. The Jets are 1-5 in his six starts this year.

Wilson has been on the sideline since Week 7 after he left the Jets' contest against the New England Patriots and was replaced by Mike White. Wilson sustained a PCL injury in the game and has yet to return to action. He won't feature in Week 11 against the Dolphins, either, with the Jets electing to start veteran signal-caller, Joe Flacco, instead.

Whether or not Wilson is “fundamentally falling apart” remains to be seen, but the Jets bringing in a coach he is familiar with can only stand to increase his confidence and comfortability at the professional level. So far he's yet to look the part of a No. 2 overall pick, but perhaps reuniting with Beck can bring out some of the qualities that made him such a coveted NFL Draft prospect.
