Consider the Source offered another preview of the band’s forthcoming album Hybrid Vol. 1: Such As A Mule on Friday with a new single, “There Was Time Now”. Out on December 17th via Ropeadope Records, the trio’s new album promises a hybrid mix of acoustic/electric elements.

Over the power trio’s 17 years together, Consider the Source has carved out a musical niche. Combining Middle Eastern influences with progressive rock in an instrumental, trancelike format, CtS’ music is unmistakable to the informed listener. That is what makes Such As A Mule such an intriguing project as the band—comprised of Gabriel Marin (guitar), John Ferrara (bass), and Jeff Mann (drums/percussion)—redefines its sound with new elements.

“There Was Time Now”—a reference to the classic 1959 episode of The Twilight Zone, “Time Enough At Last”—contains familiar hallmarks of Consider the Source’s music, most noticeably Marin’s loping, fretless guitar. The song’s a-typical time signature guides listeners in as the more-traditional tones set the baseline for the beginning of the song. As the track progresses, the music becomes more captivating as the intensity rises and the band quickly works itself into a frenzy, switching over to the pounding prog rock for which it is known.
