London's Nilüfer Yanya released her debut album, Miss Universe, in 2019 and the Feeling Lucky? EP in late 2020 and a remix EP too. This month she's dropped an early hint of what's to come on her second album, Painless, due on March 4, 2022. On "UKNY" tonight at 11 p.m., the first single from that forthcoming release —  and like many of Yanya's songs, it's a tough stance on survival in an often unkind world.

Back on March 6, 2020 I hosted an FUV Live session with Dry Cleaning, not realizing at the time that it would not only be the last Studio A session before the pandemic lockdown, but also the last live music I'd see in over 20 months. Well, on Thursday night, I finally saw a live band again — and it was Dry Cleaning at the Rainbow Room. The symmetry of that journey was an emotional one, and tonight I'll play their set opener from their top-of-the-Rock gig, from the London band's outstanding debut album, New Long Leg, one of the very best of 2021.

Also planned: a riveting new single from the Northern Irish-Dutch duo Fräulein and an effervescent one from Londoners Weird Milk. I'll dig deeper into Damon Albarn's Icelandic love letter, The Nearer the Fountain, More Pure the Stream Flows, an album of intense beauty and sorrow. Beak>, the trio of Portishead's Geoff Barrow, Moon Gangs' Will Young, and Billy Fuller of Robert Plant's Sensational Shape Shifters, have new music, plus a dip into Baltimore club via Manchester's Anz.

All that and more on "UKNY," Sundays 11 p.m.-midnight on 90.7, streaming online, and found after broadcast in the Weekend Archives.
