COHOES ROTARY ORNAMENT & MUG SALE: In 2004 The Rotary Club of Cohoes started a collectible series of Christmas ornaments featuring historic landmarks in the City of Cohoes. This year’s ornament depicts St. Agnes Church. A portion of the proceeds for the sale of the 2021 ornament will go to support the programs at the Connect Center for Youth, currently operating in the former St. Agnes Church. WINTERTIME WONDERLAND: Billed as the largest indoor holiday event in the Capital Region, is currently open Nov. 20 – Dec. 23 with varying hours. It is located at 195 Troy Schenectady Rd in Latham, previously occupied by Kmart and directly next to Vent Fitness. This 50,000-square-foot indoor holiday event is set at the North Pole and features many attractions inside. Dazzling decorated villages invite all to take selfies at every turn. Families will find themselves gliding through a frosty ice maze, parading past Santa’s village, peeking into Santa’s workshop, meeting Mr. Claus and friends, wandering down Candy Cane Alley’s whimsical light display, helping stop You-Know-Who from stealing Christmas, meeting his real-life dog Max, and so much more. Families will also have the opportunity to stop at Santa’s Post Office where children are encouraged to mail letters to Santa with the inclusion of a return address for Santa to respond. Upon entering, children will receive a greeting card for them to decorate and keep. This is the beginning of a scavenger hunt, meet-and-greet game, designed to have children find all of the holiday characters along the way such as the Gingerbread Man, Mrs. Claus, Elves, Ice Princesses, a Snowman, and more. Characters will give each child a sticker to be placed on their greeting card. Toward the end of the event, all are invited to shop at the local vendor market, make-your-own Sand Art, support local non-profits, view and purchase professional photos taken throughout the event, and more. TROY TURKEY TROT: In-person road racing returns to the Collar City Thanksgiving morning for the 105th anniversary of the Troy Turkey Trot. The Troy Turkey Trot is the nation’s 12th and world’s 64th oldest road race. Since its humble beginnings in 1916 when six runners entered, the Trot has grown to become one of America’s largest road races with more than 7,000 participants. This year will feature a return to in-person racing, as well as a convenient virtual option for those concerned about being around others or who plan to be away. Our race day gets underway with the Capital Region’s only Thanksgiving Day 10K at 8 a.m. It is followed by the one-mile Turkey Walk and Grade School Mile at 9:30 a.m.and our popular 5K run at 10 a.m. Join us in this proud annual tradition! TURKEY TROT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Individuals and small groups are needed to affix labels to runners’ bibs Tuesday, Nov. 23 (5-7 p.m.) at the Italian Community Center (ICC), 1450 5th Ave, Troy. GREENS SHOW: Troy Garden Club and the Hart-Cluett Mansions 65th annual Greens Show event will be held from noon to 8 p.m. on Dec. 2, and noon to 5 p.m. from Dec. 3 through Dec. 5 at 57 Second St. in Troy. The Greens Show is a holiday tradition! The Hart-Cluett House will be magically transformed into a festive holiday display with fresh greens, flowers and more. Due to the pandemic, the 2020 Holiday Greens Show was only available on the exterior of the iconic Hart-Cluett House. This year, the Van Rensselaer Garden Club is delighted to announce that twelve rooms inside the Marble House at the Hart Cluett Museum will be decorated for the holidays with a Children’s Holiday Storybooks theme. Our COVID safety protocols include: reducing the number of tickets available due to space restrictions, guided timed- tours, and requiring mask wearing for all participants. SURVIVORS OF SUICIDE SUPPORT GROUP: The “Further Along Survivors of Suicide” Monthly Support Group meets the second Tuesday of each month. The group is structured to meet the needs of people who have lost a loved one to suicide and who are approximately 18-24 months past the date of their loss. It is not designed for someone who is recently bereaved. Facilitators are peers who have attended AFSP’s (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention – AFSP.org) “Facilitating a Suicide Bereavement Support Group” training. There is no charge, but we encourage people to bring a treat to share or a book that would help someone else on their healing journey that we can include in our lending library. POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION SUPPORT GROUP: Albany Med’s Division of General Pediatrics will host a weekly Postpartum Depression Support Group for mothers and fathers struggling emotionally following the birth of a child. The group is open to mothers who have given birth within the past year and fathers with a child less than one year old who have no additional support. A virtual session via Zoom will be held Mondays from noon to 12:45 p.m. In-person sessions will be held each Tuesday from 4:15 to 5 p.m. at 391 Myrtle Ave., third floor, Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics conference room, Albany. READING MENTORS NEEDED: Reading mentors are currently needed for children in Troy Public Schools. Do you enjoy reading? Would you like to share your love of reading with children to support their reading development? Do you have an hour a week to spare? If so, the Everybody WINS! Power Lunch program is just for you. Everybody WINS! Power Lunch is an innovative reading and mentoring program that increases children’s prospects for success in school and in life. Power Lunch pairs elementary school children, one-to-one, with volunteers from nearby businesses, colleges and the community. Once a week, reading partners enjoy conversation together at the school, and the adult reads a book aloud to the child while he/she eats lunch. Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County needs mentors for School 14 on Wednesdays and School 2 on Tuesdays. Please know that volunteers will be required to wear a mask while in the school and while reading. The children will be unmasked since they will be eating their lunch while volunteers are reading. COMFORT FOR THOSE WHO MOURN: A six-week, nondenominational grief support group for those mourning the death of a loved one will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays through Dec. 3 at St Luke’s on the Hill, located at 40 McBride Rd. in Mechanicville. NO ERASER NEEDED: Beginning Thursday, July 22, The Arts Center of the Capital Region, located at 265 River St. in Troy, invites our regional community and beyond to join us for “No Eraser Needed.” This exhibition was created as a community gallery project. ACCR invites the public to come into our Main gallery and create work on our gallery walls. We have provided a platform for expression that can be shared with all who visit the Arts Center. SEEKING DONATIONS FOR TROOPS: Capital Region NY 2 Blue Star Mothers of America regularly sends Freedom Boxes to our deployed troops. SWIM LESSONS: City officials announced details on swim lesson availability at the South Troy Swimming Pool for the 2021 season. Lessons will be held Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. until noon. Registration is required for participants, and is limited to individuals between the ages of 4-15. Registration is available at the South Troy Pool during normal operating hours, or by calling (518) 270-5014. The South Troy Swimming Pool– located on S Troy Pool Lane–is open daily to the public from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. (weather permitting). Access to the pool will be limited to Troy residents only. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The City of Troy is partnering with the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Capital Area (BGCCA) to operate the facility for the 2021 season. BGCCA will provide lifeguards and offer swimming lessons and free lunch programs. CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS: Troy City Council meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. They typically take place in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 433 River St, Troy, but are currently being held virtually via Zoom. Committee meetings are scheduled on a regular basis. Agendas and minutes for meetings are posted on the city’s website. All meetings are open to the public. At monthly regular meetings, Troy residents can discuss any issue related to the City of Troy. TROY CYO GENERAL APPEAL: The Troy Youth Association (CYO) recently announced that all of last year’s successful General Appeal Chairpersons which surpassed the goal of $10,000 with a final total of $15,500 will be back on board. They include; Frank Merola Rensselaer County Clerk and William Fagan President Wm.J. Fagan &Sons, Inc. Clem Campana, Facilities Manager @ HVCC and Kelly Forenzo past CYO Center Programmer and fundraising Chairperson will again team up to work for the youth in the Troy Area. The three officers and Kelly have been active members totaling over 80 years of service to the youth in the Troy Community through their involvement with the agency. Their dedication to the Center and the community was especially appreciated with the donors contributing to surpass the original goal. The General Appeal campaign raises funds from business, civic and community leaders to assist the CYO in providing youth and community based programs that benefit the Troy youth. Among the services the agency provides are after school childcare, summer day camp, teen programs that include basketball leagues, drug awareness activities that include more than 2500 youth and adults from around the Capital Region as well as the Challenger programs that averages about 40 participants with disabilities. The General Appeal Campaign was originated seven years ago to offset the decrease in funding, high cost of energy usage, building repair and to continue to serve the families with low cost fees. We hope that you will again support our agency in these critical times when every dollar means so much to the youth of Troy.

BULK COLLECTION RESUMING: Officials with the Troy Department of General Services announced that bulk pickup will resume on May 10. Troy residents can request items such as furniture, appliances, carpets, mattresses, etc. be picked up by scheduling an appointment with the Department of Public Works (DPW). To schedule a bulk pickup, residents must contact the DPW dispatcher at (518) 270-4579. Residents should not place bulk items curbside prior to contacting DPW. Doing so will violate City Code and you may be assessed a fine. There is a $25 haul charge for all scheduled bulk collections up to 2 cubic yards (ex: washer and dryer side by side). Non-owner-occupied properties will be charged an additional fee based upon specific bulk waste items. Tenants are asked to coordinate with their landlord or property owner when scheduling a bulk pickup. Owner-occupied properties are exempt from itemized charges. Property owners who use private garbage collection can utilize the City’s bulk collection service, but will be subject to the haul charge and additional per-item fees. PRESERVE THE BOUNTY: A series of virtual home food preservation classes will be offered by Cornell Cooperative Extension Albany County this spring and summer. FREAR PARK GOLF COURSE 90TH SEASON: Season passes for Frear Park Municipal Golf Course are available for purchase at the Pro Shop, 2701 Lavin Ct., Monday through Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm. The course is celebrating its 90th season of operation in 2021. Troy residents qualify for daily discounts on greens fees with a Resident Recreational ID Card. ID Cards can be purchased at the Pro Shop for $25 with proof of residency (state-issued driver’s license, cable or telephone bill, etc.). TROY NIGHT OUT: Last Friday of every month – 5 to 9 p.m. – downtown Troy. Troy Night Out is an extended evening highlighting shops, restaurants, arts and culture that takes place on the last Friday of every month in downtown Troy. Attendees are able to support virtually or stroll throughout the streets and businesses, enjoying art openings, music performances, fine restaurants as well as unique boutiques of all varieties. LITTLE FREE LIBRARY: There’s a new Little Free Library at the corner of Van Schaick Avenue and Delaware Avenue in Cohoes. This library was designed to be a replica of the Van Schaick Mansion. It contains children’s books, interesting novels, and all types of reading material that will be of interest to any and all age groups.

CLOTHING SHED: The Clothing Shed located at the Latham-Colonie Knights of Columbus, 328 Troy-Schenectady Road has reopened! The Covid-19 Pandemic has hit the Knights of Columbus and the Columbiettes very hard. We’ve had very few opportunities this past year to raise funds for the Community Groups we support! We accept clothing, shoes, belts, purses, blankets, sheets, towels, comforters, curtains, pillowcases and stuffed animals. Please bag all items. We do not accept: furniture, electronics , books, household items, toys, garbage, pillows, rags, fabric scraps, etc.

LITERACY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Make a Difference in the New Year: Be a Literacy Volunteer in Rensselaer or Albany County – Would you like to help someone learn to read, write, or speak English? NEW TROY PAY-BY-PHONE PARKING APP: The City of Troy has launched a new pay-by-phone mobile app for metered parking in the Collar City. The app provides a simple, easy to use option for drivers to pay for parking in downtown Troy. Drivers will be able to pay for on-street metered parking using the new Passport Parking mobile app beginning January 4, 2021. The Passport Parking application is available for free download on iOS and Android devices, and at www.passportparking.com. NEW TROY ONLINE PARKING PERMIT SYSTEM: The City of Troy recently launched a new online parking permit registration system for spaces in municipally-operated lots and garages. The system will simplify the permit reservation and payment process and allow the City to issue and track parking permits using license plates instead of physical tags. Effective January 2021, monthly parking fees for municipal lots & garages will increase to $75. Drivers are encouraged to renew their current parking permit online at www.troyparkingpermits.rmcpay.com. APPRENTICESHIP OPPORTUNITY: The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for the Eastern New York Laborers Training Center will conduct a recruitment from April 16, 2021 through April 15, 2022 for ten Skilled Construction Craft Laborer apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today. FREE ART KITS: The Troy Public Library is giving away free Art Kits courtesy of the TANG Museum! Kids ages 5-12 can pick up a set of art supplies including watercolor pencils, markers, coloring pages, and a sketch pad along with instructions for creating art projects at home. FARMERS MARKET: The Troy Waterfront Farmers Market (TWFM) is holding its Winter markets from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays indoors at the former Lansingburgh Price Chopper, More than 60 vendors will participate. For the previous 18 years, the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market held its winter market downtown in the Troy Atrium, which the organization leased from the owner. This winter will be the first time since its inception that the market will have a presence in Lansingburgh, Troy’s northernmost district. In accordance with New York State’s current COVID-19 guidelines, the Lansingburgh store will have a capacity of 200 at any one time. After counting the vendors and staff, the space will be able to safely accommodate approx. 120 customers at a time with ample room for social distancing. Customers can arrive any time during market hours. When the market reaches capacity, arriving customers will be asked to wait in line outside the store. Shopping from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. will be prioritized for seniors age 60+ and the immunocompromised. USS SLATER OPEN: USS SLATER, the last Destroyer Escort afloat in America, is open to the public for her 24th season in Albany. As always, walk-ins are more than welcome. TICK TALK: The Lyme Action Network is taking its message to the online platform. To help people understand about Lyme and other tick-borne diseases, the Lyme Action Network will be offering video presentations, Zoom meetings, and other virtual events to help people understand the dangers of tick bites and what to do if they get bitten. The Lyme Action Network has already confirmed three presentations, with more in the pipeline. SPAC LEARNING LIBRARY: Saratoga Performing Arts Center announced that it has unveiled its new Learning Library, created to bring free original arts educational content to students, families and educators at a time when previously scheduled in-school presentations and classes are not feasible due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of the Center’s mission to provide meaningful educational programming to the community while also supporting local artists, the videos and exercises feature more than 25 professional musicians and dancers who have been affected by the pandemic such as Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company, professional stepping company Soul Steps and Caroga Arts Collective, as well as former Broadway performers, composers and local storytellers. DAYCARE OPENINGS: A Child’s Place at Unity House recently reopened a few of its day care classrooms with a limited number of children and now is prepared to open more classrooms to help essential workers who have children in need of day care. A Child’s Place is now able to take an additional children at both its Troy site and its Albany location. Currently, A Child’s Place is enrolling small groups of children per room and staffing each room with just one teacher to minimize contact between children and adults. In addition, the highest level of CDC precautions are being practiced. A Child’s Place serves children from five weeks to five years old in classrooms for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. Its centers are located at 435 Fourth St. in Troy and 50 Philip St. in Albany. The centers also provide early intervention and preschool developmental services in speech/language, physical and occupational therapy. POESTENKILL SENIORS: The Poestenkill Seniors typically hold weekly meetings every Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Sullivan Jones VFW Post in Poestenkill. All seniors are welcome. COHOES PUBLIC LIBRARY: The Cohoes Public Library, in conjunction with the Cohoes Senior Center, invites seniors to take the van to the library on the first and third Wednesday of the month. They can peruse the books, use the computer, participate in the knitting/crocheting group, join a special book club (the 3rd Wednesday of the month) and participate in other specially designed programs. THRIFT SHOP: The Basement on First Street, a thrift shop located at St. John’s Episcopal Church on First Street in Troy is open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 till noon, with plenty of warm clothing and lots of other interesting items. The church also offers free bread and coffee to all who come in on Saturdays. Come in from the cold, have a cup of coffee and bagel and then come into the thrift shop for some great deals.

THE BOOK SELLER: The Book Seller, sponsored by the Friends of the Troy Public Library, is located at the Lansingburgh Branch at 114th Street and 4th Avenue. Hours are Wednesdays from 2 to 5 p.m. and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 1 pm. The store offers a wide variety of gently used books at bargain prices. Hard cover and trade books are one dollar and children’s books are twenty five cents. The Book Seller also has a collection of CDs. Proceeds from the store help support programs, services and improvements to both library buildings. PITTSTOWN SENIORS: The town of Pittstown Seniors hold their monthly meetings on the first Wednesday of the month starting with a covered dish luncheon at noon. T.O.P.S meetings are held at the Raymertown Fire House on Mason Lane. All seniors 55 or over are invited to attend.

YEAR-ROUND RECYCLING: Zion’s United Church of Christ of Taborton receives the following items for recycling in the Blue Box next to the front door of the Church Hall: clothing, belts, blankets, drapery, hats, hand bags, paired shoes, sheets, sneakers, towels and stuffed animals. In the Greenfiber green recycling container, in the church parking lot, the church receives newspapers, phone books, office paper, cardboard, cereal boxes, magazines, brown paper bags and construction paper. Donate all used items to Doors of Hope in West Sand Lake. Donate used furniture to the furniture program of Troy Area United Ministries. FOOD PANTRY: Faith’s Pantry at Grace Church, 34 Third St. is open by appointment. The emergency food pantry is open from 10 a.m. to noon each Friday. FREE COMMUNITY DINNERS: The second Thursday of every month a free community dinner is served in the city of Rensselaer from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. In an ecumenical partnership, Hope Lutheran Church of North Greenbush, and Rensselaer Presbyterian Church, 34 Broadway have combined and created Hopes Kitchen.

AMERICAN ITALIAN MUSEUM AND CULTURAL CENTER: The American Italian Museum and Cultural Center is located at 1227 Central Avenue in Albany. Since 1979 the museum has fulfilled its mission – to record and preserve Italian heritage for present and future generations – with the help of its dedicated, all volunteer staff. Ours is the largest American Italian museum in the eastern U.S. maintaining 10 exhibit rooms, a Hall of History and a library including research materials. HOLIDAY LIGHTED NIGHTS: The Washington County Fairgrounds team is already planning for the 2021 Holiday Season! Debuting Thanksgiving weekend and continuing through December, the Washington County Fairgrounds is proud to present “Holiday Lighted Nights,” a drive-thru holiday experience located throughout the fairgrounds featuring holiday-lighted scenes. A tradition since 1890, the Washington County Fair has served as a place for generations where memories are made each August for the many exhibitors, vendors, and fair patrons that join us. “Holiday Lighted Nights” will expand on that experience and have the fairgrounds serve as a place where our community can join us for new traditions throughout the year. We look forward to the community seeing the fairgrounds in a new “light” by making a new tradition at the fairgrounds this holiday season!
