Any adult of 18 years and older who wants a COVID-19 booster shot can now get one in Oregon and Washington. On Saturday, experts with the Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup concurred with the federal recommendation for vaccine booster doses.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday authorized expanding booster shot eligibility to people 18 and older and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) quickly affirmed that decision later the same day.
While the booster shot is available to all adults, it is also recommended for those 50 and older.
Individuals who have completed a Pfizer or Moderna vaccine series should get a booster dose after at least six months. Those who received a single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine should get a booster after two months, according to the workgroup.
The Oregon Health Authority will now inform health care providers that booster doses for people 18 and older can begin this weekend.
As with every major vaccine milestone throughout the coronavirus pandemic, the Western States Workgroup has reviewed the federal process before issuing its own endorsement for the west coast states of Washington, Oregon, California, and Nevada. The workgroup is comprised of scientists with expertise in immunization and public health.
Statement from Oregon Governor Kate Brown:
"Starting today, every adult who wants a booster will be able to get one. Vaccines are our pathway out of this pandemic. I'm committed to ensuring our most vulnerable Oregonians are protected from COVID-19, and ensuring equitable access to boosters and the extra layer of protection they provide. If you still have questions about getting vaccinated, call your doctor or health care provider today to get your questions answered.”
Statement from Washington Governor Jay Inslee:
“Broad eligibility for COVID boosters is good news for Washington state. This additional level of protection will help reduce cases, hospitalizations and deaths. I thank the Western States workgroup for their ongoing review and analysis of COVID vaccinations. I am glad that any Washingtonians who want a booster shot will now have access to them, and receive additional protection going into winter and the holiday season.”
