Now the Sun have reported that Lingard is already making personal arrangements over a return to the capital in January in a £10m deal.

Lingard enjoyed a successful loan spell at West Ham for the second half of last season, scoring nine goals and providing five assists to help David Moyes' side to qualify for the Europa League.

Moyes had hoped to sign Lingard permanently in the summer but was priced out of a move by the Red Devils.

The playmaker is in the final year of his contract and is a free agent at the end of the season.

Lingard though could look to leave earlier due to his lack of game-time at United so far this season, having made five Premier League appearances - all from the bench.

The United boss on Friday insisted that Lingard was still an important part of the team despite stalling over a new contract.

He said in his press conference ahead of United's trip to Watford: 'Jesse is training really hard, really well, and he's ready and available for me.

'He's disappointed he's not played more... Jesse is still a important part of this squad, he gives energy to the group every day.'

Lingard can open talks with foreign clubs from January 1 having already attracted strong interest from Barcelona and AC Milan. A representative from Lingard's camp is thought to have travelled to Spain for talks with clubs last week.

And the England international put a cryptic post on his Instagram on Friday afternoon by re-sharing a video of him scoring against Wolves last season while on loan at West Ham, ahead of the east Londoners' trip to Molineux this weekend.

Lingard commented on West Ham's original video of him scoring over the weekend with the wind emoji - to recognise his pace in scoring the goal - with Hammers star Declan Rice responding with the 'eyes emoji', hinting that his repost is a come and get me plea.
