There was much scrutiny on Real Madrid when they decided not to renew Sergio Ramos’ contract and let him leave. Scrutiny which still continues even this season with the team’s current defensive issues. Every time there are defensive mistakes, the conversations always return to Sergio Ramos and about why the club did not do more to keep him.

However, after analyzing his current situation, the decision to not renew the long-time captain seems to be making more sense.

Since signing for PSG, Ramos has still yet to make his debut and reports have circulated that there is uncertainty within the French side about his recovery and if he will be able to regain his old form. Whether these reports are accurate or not and even though he is beginning to train with the Parisian side, it seems the decision to let him leave was not just down to a breakdown with Florentino Perez and the board as initially reported.

This is also adding to the fact that since getting surgery at beginning of the calendar year, he only took part in a hand full of matches for Real Madrid and barely played in any important games. Along with this, he was not even called up to the Spanish national team to take part in the Euros.

Real Madrid knew paying Sergio Ramos more would be too risky

There was much criticism of Luis Enrique for this decision and many tried to pin it on his anti-Real Madrid ways being a former Barcelona player.

However, Ramos had been a vital piece in Luis Enrique’s squad and was even called up to the national team months prior to the Euros when he had just started playing again for Real Madrid after recovering from his surgery. Interestingly, he got injured again during that international window and never fully recovered from that injury.

The fact that he still has not played for PSG despite barely playing in the latter stages of last season and not being involved in any international competitions means there is something that both Real Madrid and the Spanish national team knew about the severity of his injury.

Regardless of whether he is able to regain his old form or not, the only person responsible for Sergio Ramos no longer being at Real Madrid anymore is himself. Was Florentino Perez annoyed with him and his agent as reports have indicated; probably. It is well known that Florentino was fed up with some of Ramos’ behavior and could not stand having to deal with his agent.

Despite the issues, the club still made him an offer and he waited too long to accept it; leaving an unpleasant sensation that he only accepted it out of desperation because no other team would offer him a better deal. Especially after Real Madrid had already signed David Alaba from Bayern Munich. He is a club legend and the great things he has done will never be forgotten, but now the supporters need to get behind the current Real Madrid players.
