The new video from Rare Demo is their first release since 2018, but their sense of humor hasn’t changed, even if the riffs are bigger… and possibly wider? Not much makes sense in the Rare Demo universe and it’s better to surrender to the deluge of chillwave, techno, and chiptune influences than try to parse each spastic melody.
The collaborative sense of silliness is catchy, especially in the world of synth-driven music, where pretense is the name of the game. But “Blast Me” is more than an ode to Bloomin’ Onions. The track—the first from their upcoming LP Big Time Bingo Boy—showcases the mystery duo at their finest, with lyricisms loosely based in reality and juicy synth lines possibly funded by Outback Steakhouse dark money.
When asked about their songwriting process, the duo explained how they “tried that thing that David Bowie did where he’d sprawl out a bunch of different words onto a table and string them together at random in order to write songs quickly so that the record labels would get off his back about writing hit song after hit song. He could then relax and do what he really wanted to do: relax.” Whether or not David Bowie was ever able to relax considering his lifestyle in the ‘70s, it’s impossible to ignore the reality that this strategy works. Because, if nothing else, “Blast Me” is a mathematically quantifiable song.
Casual dining references aside, the artistic value of “Blast Me” is inseparable from its absolute meaninglessness. It’s a double dose of nonsense to keep us sane, hearkening back to a time when music was fun and when BYOB shows at DIY art spaces were more common than mixed-use developments. Get blasted!
