‘Star Wars: Battlefront 3’ Cancelled As It Was Too Expensive To Make, Says Insider

‘Star Wars: Battlefront 3’ Cancelled As It Was Too Expensive To Make, Says Insider

The license is now free game to all sorts of studios.

A third Star Wars: Battlefront game was binned because Electronic Arts argued that the project (and, most pertinently, the license) would have been too expensive to follow through with.

DICE, which is also the developer behind the Battlefield series, had outlined some ideas for a third game and pitched it to the publisher. However, it wasn’t interested as the cost of the license would have been a significant negative in its possible profits. “It got turned down because it takes 20% more sales to make the same money,” explained an anonymous developer speaking to industry insider Tom Henderson

Sure, Star Wars: Battlefront 2 did not have the most successful start back in 2017. The pervasiveness of loot boxes and microtransactions rankled critics and fans, along with the actual gameplay advantages that this content offered the player if they shelled out. A number of gambling regulators also focused on the game for its paid elements, which was not a brilliant look.

Yet, now, those events are but a distant memory. A lot of expansive content updates kept the community enthused and entertained and the Celebration Edition of Star Wars: Battlefront 2 gave players the entire collection of extras that were offered in the game’s store over the course of the two years. The news that the series won’t be rounded out to a trilogy is disheartening.

Henderson confirmed that there are two new Star Wars games in the works with EA and that these will be single-player outings rather than live service titles. These are likely to be the sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and the unnamed game from Motive Studios.

He corroborated his statements with mentions that a number of Battlefront developers have left DICE in the last year, like creative director Dennis Bränvall, core gameplay designer Christian Johannesé, and lead hero designer Guillaume Mroz. Instead, DICE is supporting Battlefield 2042 and the next entry to follow in that series.

Of course, EA no longer has the monopoly on the Star Wars license so we will be seeing new stories in a galaxy far, far away from other studios. One of these is Ubisoft, and the rumour mill seems to suggest that Quantic Dream is going to reveal something titled Star Wars Eclipse at The Game Awards in December.
