TOWN OF ULSTER, N.Y. — One family was displaced by a two-alarm basement apartment fire at the Sunset Garden Apartments complex on Birch Street, Ulster Hose Assistant Fire Chief Mathew Molinaro said Saturday, Nov. 20.

At 8:20 p.m. Friday firefighters responded to the blaze at building two of the 45 Birch St. complex, Molinaro said. He added that after searching the building, firefighters determined that initial reports of residents trapped in the building were unfounded and all residents had gotten out safely before their arrival.

Four of the six apartments in building two were occupied and all but the basement apartment were safe to return to Friday night, he said. One family living in the basement apartment received assistance from the Hudson Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross which provided financial assistance that can be used for necessities such as shelter, food, and clothing to two adults, according to a press release.

The fire was extinguished “relatively quickly” and firefighters returned to quarters by 10:30 p.m., he said. Molinaro said the fire’s cause is being investigated by the Ulster County Fire Investigation Unit.

He said no injuries were reported.
