Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard pushed the idea that USC football should go after Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly to fill the opening in Los Angeles.

USC athletic director Mike Bohn has a huge decision to make over the coming weeks. Getting his first head coaching hire right is essential to putting the Trojans back in contention.

The hard part is figuring out who has the chops to make USC a playoff contender.

Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard think they have the right guy: Brian Kelly.

Brian Kelly to USC? Kirk Herbstreit says it should happen

On College GameDay, Herbstreit and Howard both put the Notre Dame head coach forward as the top option for the Trojans to replace Clay Helton.

From a winning perspective, it makes total sense. Kelly has won at every stop he’s been at. He’s kept Notre Dame fighting for playoff berths.

However, Howard argued that Kelly has “taken Notre Dame as far as they can go.” Moving on to USC could give him the resources to go out and win a national championship.

Undoubtedly Kelly would be a home run hire for just about every job opening out there. The idea of him leaving Notre Dame, where he is the winningest coach in their storied history, is the unbelievable part.

If USC offered a salary boost and Kelly was interested in trading Indiana winters for Southern California sunshine, maybe the draw would be big enough.

Still, Kelly is an Irish Catholic who has spent the better part of the last four decades coaching in the midwest. Would he really want to leave?
