Kirk Herbstreit and the other College GameDay analysts discussed the open jobs in college football.

There was certainly no consensus on who LSU should hire as its next head coach on College GameDay. Opinions varied wildly.

ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit said he would hire Cincinnati’s head coach away from the Bearcats.

“Luke Fickell,” Herbstreit said on College Football Gameday on Saturday. “I’d try to get Luke Fickell, even at LSU.”

There’s reason to think Herbstreit, who played quarterback for Ohio State, would have some insight into the matter. However, Fickell’s name hasn’t been mentioned often to replace Ed Orgeron, who will not be retained after this season. Perhaps Fickell should be a more prominent name in the conversation. He is 45-14 at Cincinnati, is 10-0 this season and has the Bearcats in the hunt for a College Football Playoff selection despite not being in a Power 5 conference.

Former Michigan receiver Desmond Howard said it isn’t yet time to give up on Michigan State coach Mel Tucker, despite reports that the Spartans have offered him a massive contract.

“Despite the fact that Michigan State is offering this huge contract to Mel Tucker, if he hasn’t signed it yet, I’m going hard after Mel Tucker,” Howard said.

Former Georgia defensive end David Pollack said it’s time for the Tigers to hire an offensive-minded coach, specifically Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher. Orgeron has coached defense for his entire career, mostly on the defensive line.

“If I’m allowed to have anybody, I’m going the opposite and hire Jimbo Fisher and go offense from Ed Orgeron,” Pollack said. “If I got to pick, I’d hire Jimbo Fisher.”

Orgeron and LSU agreed to a separation in September that will commence after the season. Fisher has said he is not interested in the LSU position, partly because he has a highly rated recruiting class that is scheduled to be completed in January. However, Fisher left Florida State abruptly so it’s hard to imagine that there is zero possibility he could leave A&M.
