Manchester City have confirmed that their Champions League clash away at RB Leipzig on December 7 will be played behind closed doors.

A rise in COVID-19 rates has seen regional authorities place Saxony into a partial lockdown.

This means that City's final Champions League group game will be played without fans. The club confirmed in a statement that away supporters who purchased a ticket will receive a full refund and will be contacted in the coming days.

City beat Leizpig 6-3 in the reverse fixture, with Christopher Nkunku grabbing a hat trick for the visitors in spite of the thrashing.

A point from City's upcoming game with Paris Saint-Germain should be enough to send them through to the knockout stage due to their vastly superior goal difference to Club Brugge, though a win at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night will see them advance as group winners.

Leipzig were eliminated after only managing a 2-2 draw with PSG on matchday four and are now competing for third place to secure a place in the knockout stages of the Europa League.

It was announced earlier this week that Bayern Munich's Champions League tie against Barcelona at the Allianz Arena on the final matchday will also be played without fans due to lockdown restrictions.

Soaring COVID-19 rates across Europe have seen the return of games being played behind closed doors.

Over the international break, the Netherlands secured qualification to the 2022 World Cup in an empty De Kuip Stadium after beating Norway 2-0.
